I am the current President of The New York Emperor’s Stickball League, Inc. (NYESL) located in the Bronx. We have been in existence 16 years now where the Florida Kings with Barbara and the Pizzaroz boys; the San Diego Knights with Bobby and Paul Ortiz, Willie Blas, and Jim Strickland; the Puerto Rico Tainos with Pepin and Noble and the various other teams from the tri-state area have become and will always be considered extended family to me on a personal level and to the members of my organization on a competitive level. We are always trying to increase awareness of the game we have all grown to love so much. This summer, 2001, we will start, for the first time ever, the first organized children’s stickball league. With funding from the NYC Children’s Services and assistance from the Bronx YMCA and radio talk show host Curtis Sliwa and the volunteer efforts of the members of NYESL, the dream of reintroducing the game of stickball to a new generation will become a reality. Check out our website, www.nyesl.org, for updates on this and other events going on in the world of stickball.

I grew up in Highbridge, 1944 -1966. Attended Sacred Heart, Manhattan prep and Fordham, then off to Vietnam and maturity!. It is impossible to explain to someone who didn’t exprience it what growing up in the 50’s – 60’s Bronx neighborhoods was like. I still remember the “checker” games we played on the sidewalk boards. Box ball and off the point with a pink “Spauldine” (25 cents!!) were simple games that I hope are recorded somewhere . George, 1210 Woodcrest 3C

Isn,t this a kick! We are one nostalgic family.I,m crusing for old friends and look what I find? My mom and then my brother. This is no fun,I just called you both. And Tony don,t get on mom what are you doing home… Anyone else out there familiar with Ollinville & Arnow circa 50s thru 80s league football, two hand touch in the street, BASKETBALL Saturday morning at Parkside or winter nights at Fordham college, and of course GIRLS… Clubs,in early 60s was the Monterey Club up by Edenwald Projects, then the Riviera lounge I believe in Yonkers, and by the late 60s it was Maxims on Jerome Ave. Lets hear it from the dancers!!

How can you forget your first kiss? It was in my closet with Victoria, the girl next door. We where about in the fifth grade. Her younger brother and sister where on the other side of the door asking “What are you doing in there?” We kissed each other on the cheek a couple of times and then one of us said how about the lips this time? Pretty racey for ten year olds around 1957. Now I must talk of THE kiss. The one that lead to my first true love. We where walking home from our first date at the movies. It was a cold Bronx winter evening. I still remember the date 2/2/62. With snow on the ground. We stopped in a small playground near her building and leaning against this large cement turtle (sounds funny when I think of it) we embraced. Let me tell you, my feet where not cold anymore. Same for my nose, hands or anything else! We went on to become great friends over the decades but have lost touch. Jill, if your out there I hope all is well.

To Anonymous, (posted sat. feb. 10 at 8:25 PM) Mom, if you want to chat with people from the old neighborhood you have to give them your e-mail address. Also, what are you doing posting messages on a Sat. night?? You should be out partying!! What would the yentas at Parkside say if they knew you were home instead of out dancing with Dad.

We lived on Arnow & Olinville Ave in the Parkside Project for 27 years. It was 7th heaven on the 7th floor, after moving from the Quonset homes on Sound View Ave. & Bruckner Blvd. Our two boys played stick ball & all those games. Now they’re playing with their grandchildren. After my youngest, (daughter),got married we moved to Las Vegas. We’d love to hear from some of our old neighbors. Still love the Bronx. Looking into all the web sites I can find about “da Bronx”

To Lisa and those who were interested in the double dutch game of D-I-S-H When you landed on D the endturner would have to turn the rope reversed or inside out so to speak and it was called “Double Orange”, or atleast that’s what we called it in the Bronx

I grew up in the Bronx near P.S. 76 and Evander H.S. we’d play just about everything: we had certain seasons when the Pea shooters would come out. Soda straws and chick peas, I think, and we would be shooting each other for hours. It’s a bit dangerous, but that was the fun. Not as dangerous and shooting paper clips and we did that to, with rubber bands. We’d normally play both of those shooting war games hiding behind cars. Not to many rules, just teams played until one side surrendered. We also played marbles, but we used elaborately designed shoe boxes with ramps and holes that contestants would have to roll their marble through or lose it. If they got their marble up the ramp and into the shoe or cigar box they won any number of marbles. This was Las Vegas before we knew it.

At 80 I look back happily at my girlhood in the North Bx.(E.223St and Paulding Ave.) Is the Ann Hutchinson Elementary School still in existence.? PS 78? What has become of the little girls with whom I stoop-sat hour after hour? And what about the boys ? All solid, mature , grandfathers, having survived World War 2.I’d much rather think about the endless hours of ringolevia and watching them steal icechips from the iceman’s truck when he left to deliver blocks of ice to his customers, Annette

Well I would be considered a baby to most of you. I’m 21. I lived at 2055 Cruger Ave, Pelham Parkway/Bronx Park East area, across from PS 105. Went to that school, until 6th grade, JHS 127 in Castle Hill, and Dodge VHS in Fordham. I lived on Cruger untill I was 20 years old and and now I live on 184th st and Park Ave. I remember playing off the stoop, skelly, asses up, brake the chain, steal the bacon, stickball, punchball, jumping rooftops, hiding in Parkchester projects, ect.. Now I travel all over the Bronx to play handball. It’s so great to hear about how the Bronx was back in the days. Please tell all the stories you can. Up until now I felt like I was the only one defending the Bronx. Although my mom and dad grew up on 149th street, I don’t get to hear the real stories about how it was back than.
