In York PA this coming Saturday Sept.22-01 we are having a fundraiser/stickball event. We are having other games too, such as boxball, jacks, jumprope, yo-yos, and of course Marbles. Spalding hopefully is donating the pink balls-either way they are the best, so come out and join us for a great time-food-knishes while they last, root beer floats, old fashioned candy-hoola hoop etc. This event is held at an old shopping center Called Ames on East Market street across from another shopping center, which has Lowes and Giants in it. Thank you Nancy Costa

came across this site by accident while looking for hopscotch info. I had forgotten all about chinese ropes and will now be buying a bag of rubberbands as soon as poss so I can show my two young daughters how to play. I don’t recall singing rhymes but I do remember saying jump, split, jump etc as we crossed the ropes. We also used the rope as a simple jump strting at ankle height then ‘kneezies’, thighs, waist, underarm. not many girls got past that.

I bought a chinese jumprope for my kids this weekend at toy r us in WI. The directions on the back said to start with the rope 6 feet off the ground! No, not inches, FEET! I remember playing on the playground at school. The school staff “out-lawed” going beyond the level of thighs because 2 girls went to the nurses office with “goose egg” bruises on their foreheads! Someone in the middle landed on the rope at a high level and the two “enders” smacked heads! Be careful when teaching your youngsters. I don’t remember songs we just chanted what we were doing ahead of the jump so the others could catch us if we were cheating. i.e., If you said “on” you’d better land on, and if not then you messed up.

Does anyone remember “Chinese Jumprope”? We connected loom loops( the kind we made potholders out of) into a large circle and then we did some kind of stepping in and out and jumping over while the loop was around two sets of ankles. Does this sound familiar to anyone????

I never knew that there was such a website as this. THIS IS GREAT. As a girl growing up in Washington D.C., if you didn’t know how to jump double dutch, you stayed your behind inside. Now I have a daughter of my own who I homeschool so I’m am trying to teach her double dutch. Hard with just the two of us girls, so I am also now teaching my two sons. (But they are double-handed right now.) At one point I was even able to jump double-handed rope (it’s all about the rythm).

Thanks for all the help teaching me to chinese jump rope. i am still in grade school but am striving to learn chinese jump rope. I think kids that can’t be satisfied with anything but electronics are shallow. Thanks again.

Here’s a different version on D-I-S-H. I was born in chicago, I’m 40 now, living in Denver. Wish I be apart of the Double Dutch Divas’in New York, they’ve got it going on! We sang,”D-i-s-h, D-i-s-h, “D” is for double dutch, “I” is for irish, “S” is for single, and “H” is for hop. Which ever on you landed on is how you jumped next. If you stopped on “D” or double dutch, you jumped double dutch to whatever rhyme you wanted. “I” or Irish you jumped to whatever rhyme you wanted, but Irish was turned like double dutch, except you turned the rope under handed. “S” was just plain single which you turned with a single rope, and did red hot peas or something. “H” or Hop, you jumped double dutch, and you jumped high on both feet, or we also called them pop ups. Have fun.

I was happy to find this site. It brings back such wonderful memories! My best friend move to Miami from Brooklyn and she taught my friends and I to double dutch. I almost forgot about it until my daughter came home from school and told me they’re jumping rope in P.E. (We live in Nebraska now). I found a website that sells double dutch ropes with booklets as well as other types of jumping ropes for competition and pleasure. They’re very reasonable. I just ordered some and can’t wait to teach my 10 yr old daughter and her friends to DOUBLE DUTCH! The site is jumprope.com. What great memories! I’ve also recently reunited with that best friend after 21 years!!
