Hello I have just found your discussion group about chinese jump ropes. Being from Great Britain we used to call this either ” French skipping ” or ” Elastics “, However I can only remember one rhymn : Scotland England Ireland Wales Inside Outside Inside Tails Jumping with the elastics like this : ( Left = position of left foot ) etc: Left Elastic Right Elastic Elastic Left Elastic Right Left Elastic Right Elastic Elastic Left Elastic Right Elastic Left Right Elastic Left Elastic Elastic Right Elastic Left Right Elastic Land on the elastics. When this has been completed successfully on ankles, raise the elastics to; shins, knees, bottoms, waists, etc….. If this was not hard enough the ends take one foot out reducing the width… Please have a go and we’ll await the replies. Have fun ! Catriona. P.S. I am a playground supervisor desperate for the revival of old games.

Seems like everyone wants to know the same thing…. what were those rules????? Well it isn’t the rules but it is a great site on “the games we used to play” !!!! http://www.gameskidsplay.net/index.html I still haven’t found the rules but did find this: Like the jump rope used in double dutch this one requires two holders and a jumper. Unlike the tradional jump rope the rope is not in motion but as the jumper jumps in and out the rope is raised until it is finally touched by the jumper. Touching the rope causes the jumper to loose their turn. Happy Jumping!

It looks like I am not the only teacher and mother wanting to revive a game I played many years ago. I too am looking for instructions for playing Chinese Jump Rope. I think we knotted a long piece of elastic, and . . .

Does anyone remeber the rules to Chinese Jump Rope? I would love to teach my daugter who could pass it on to a whole new generation of kids. All I remember is 2 people hold the rope around their ankles and one person jumps in and out. I think the rope is moved up as the jumber becomes proficient.

Hi! I’ll be honest and say I can’t double dutch at all. But I would love to learn how! I teach 5th graders and the girls and I have been trying to teach each other how. We can turn the ropes and jump in…and that’s where it stops. Does anyone know where to find how to keep going or have any pointers? Thanks a bunch.

This is in reply to Victoria Linchong’s message on 11/24/99, regarding the last part about the game played in a ring. I played a game like that a few times in elementary school. I don’t remember any “Eenie”, but I don’t remember it all, either. Here’s what I do remember: …And the bullfrogs jump from bank to bank. eep, op, eep op op, Skiddle, diddle, ker-PLOP! The person who was supposed to get hit on plop had to try to make the person slapping their hand miss. They stayed in if they made the other person miss. Otherwise they were out.

I am thrilled to find this site. When I was in the second grade I lived with my grandmother in New York City, on East 87th Street. I went to St. Joseph’s Catholic School just down the street. I was introduced to jumprope during recess at school. One of the rhymes I remember went like this, and I’ll bet everyone who has ever jumped rope knows this one: Down in the meadow Where the green grass grows There sits Paula As sweet as a rose She sang and she sang and she sang so sweet Along came Johnny and kissed her on the cheek! How many times did he kiss her? The rope turners would double-time the turns and everyone would be yelling the count! What fun and what memories. Thanks so much for this wonderful website.
