I’m not sure where the game orginates but it was originally played with small smooth stones about pebbles sized and so was called Jack stones. i’ve seen children in Africa playing something like it. You can buy really nice heavy brass jacks from Hearthsong (www.hearthsong.com) The Mother Goose rhyme of Jack be nimble has nothing to do with the game; it’s a riddle and Jack is the flame. Hearthsong also has rules of the game including the fancies. Any one remember how the various fancies are played? I want to teach some to my daughters

I know very little about the game of jacks, but I do have a question for anybody out there who can answer it. Where does the game of Jacks originate from? Where was it first played? I need a little bit of history for a project at work.

Hi There – Contact Hammond Toys. Their website is fairly substandard, but they list Chinese Jacks as a part of their inventory. I remember the game from 6th grade…

thanks for your help about the Jacks rhymes and actually yes a sort of equivalent game was in France also. We call this ” play at knuckle bones” and as you figure , instead of jacks , things looking like sort of knuckle bones were thrown in the air but I don’t remember neither the material nor the the game itself. I guess this was smething from the previous generations.

I have occasionally found the “real” old-fashioned metal jacks at Walmart. I have also just ordered 5 dozen of them from www.oriental.com for a Girl Scout event I am conducting on “Games of Yesteryear.” One really needs the metal jacks as the ones made from plastic do not have the right “weight” to them and “skitter.” I was hoping to find a website giving the old rhymes to the game. I used to play it, but don’t remember the rhymes. Any help?

I didn’t know “Nimble Jack” of nursery rhyme fame ever showed up in the game of jacks! Clearly more research is needed on this topic. This seems to be a credible explanation of the origin of “Jack be nimble,” though… http://www.rooneydesign.com/JackBeNimble.html

Dear French person, I remember there was a fancy that you played with Jacks saying the little rhyme. You threw up the ball and said jack be nimble, touched the ground and caught the ball. Then you threw up the ball, said “Jack be Quick,” touched the ground again and caught the ball. Then you threw up the ball, said “Jack jumped over,” and touched the ground on the two sides of the jack like your finger was jumping over and caught the ball, finally, threw up the ball said “the candle stick,” picked up the jack and caught the ball. It was an easy fancy

Dear French person, Thanks for writing. The “Jack” in the “Jack be nimble” rhyme refers to a fictional person named Jack. “Jacks” is a game played with little metal things (a “jack”) and a ball. It is described in detail at the top of this discussion. A brief translation dictionary: “One-zees”, “two-zees”, etc., refers to the number of jacks you need to pick up. Non-standard English numbers like this is used in many street games. I don’t know if there’s a French equivalent (“trois-cize”?); it’s probably roughtly equivalent to “premiere, deuxieme, troisieme”, etc. Do they play anything like this in France? Let us know! -Hugh McNally hmcnally [at] streetplay [dot] com

Hi – I’m french and doesn’t know enough about the jacks… I know there is a little song like “jack be nimble , jack be quick , jack jump over the candlestick”. But I don’t understand WHY the song says the jack is jumping while most of the evidences I read here say you pick-up the jack on the ground before the ball bounced … I guess I miss something in-between 🙂
