Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 11, 2006 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

Here’s another version of Down Down Baby {also known as Shimmy Shimmy Co Co Pa}. This one comes from Tanya who lives near Atlanta, Ga, but I’ve collected other similar versions from Pittsburgh, PA and other cities: Down, down, baby down by the roller coaster Sweet, sweet baby I’ll never let you go Shemie, shemie coco butter, shemie shemie pop I like coffee, I like tea, I like a black boy and he likes me So step back white boy, you don’t shine I’ll get a black boy to beat your behind Last night and the night before I met my boyfriend at the candy store He bought me ice cream he bought me cake He brought me home with a belly ache Mama, mama, I feel sick Call the doctor, quick, quick, quick Doctor, doctor, will I die Close your eyes and count to five 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, I’m Alive!

I’ve collected a number of different versions of this handclap rhyme from Pittsburgh, Penn. I also have a version from Erie Pa, Cleveland, Ohio, and New York City. In those cities, it is usually called “Tweeleelee”. That title & some of the words to this rhyme comes from Michael Jackson’s recording “Rockin Robin”. Here’s one “clean” version of Tweeleelee: Tweleelee Tweleelee Tweleelee Tweleelee Tweleelee Popsicle, Popsicle, Your butt stinks! He rocks in the treetops all day long a rockin and a boppin and ah singin his song. All the little birds on Jay bird street like to hear the robin go

really neat memories but also there were many card games, not playing cards. knuckles: for example, I remember the loser getting his hand sandwiched between any number of cards on the top and pottom and stumped with their opponents shoe or choppers in which you received x amount of chops on your knuckles with the entire deck. game played around 7th and catharine. south philly

I have one quick question:…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 9, 2006 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 9, 2006

I have one quick question: I always thought the caps went right-side up (with the wax on the ground) but my brothers and sisters think it goes upside-down with the wax facing up. Which way are you supposed to have the caps?

Does anyone remember WAR!…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 6, 2006 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Does anyone remember WAR! aka “I Decalre War On…” ? One kid with a ball was it, and he declared war on one of the other kids, each of whom represented a country. The kids stood in a circle surrounding the kid who was it. He would yell “I declare war on___”, bounce the ball as high as he could, and all the kids would run as fast, and as far away from the kid who was it, as they could. The one kid who’s country was declared war upon had to run back, catch the ball, and I think yell “freeze” That’s about all I remember. Can anyone fill in the blanks? Thanks

What an excellent site….

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on February 2, 2006 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

What an excellent site. I was just talking to a co-worker about pimple balls and decide to do a search. I came upon this site. Man, in Mayfair/Holmesburg life was great in the 70’s and 80’s. Wall ball, ass ball, step ball, wire ball, stick ball, half ball, homerun derby, man hunt, hide the belt. All classic games only played in Philly as far as I knew anyway. Oh, can’t forget wiffle ball. We had the perfect field for wiffle ball. We would play ovet at Forrest Elementry at Cottage and Bliegh St. We played between two buildings. Hitting the ball past the defense and the ball hitting the wall below the ledge was a single, above the ledge but below the window was a double, in the area where the window was, was a triple and above the window was a homer. The defense could catch it off the wall and it was an out. If they missed it and it hit the ground then it was a hit. Great game!

This message is for benny brugman of tampa florida.benny I really appreciate you sending me a invitation to the stick tournament, on April 22 to April 23. I would really want to go, but I have family wedding to go in atlanta ga. Its sound like a great and exciting time to play stick ball. I wouldn’t have miss this for any other reason.I am 74 now and can still a very long ball. Its funny when had games in the bronx or any borough,no one in the family could have weddings, births, funerals, to have us miss any games. well thanks again. have a fabulous time. From one of loyal stickball players. Jerry Gringer of Georgia.
