Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 6, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsDecember 4, 2019

I’m like any other kid from Brooklyn and remember skelly very well. I remember the set up – a large square – usually a cement square on the sidewalk of our dreams – we’d chalk several small squares in each of the four corners, additional small squares on each of the four sides of the larger square. Then a smaller square in the center. We’d use bottle caps, and yes, sometimes we’d melt wax in them to give them extra weight. It brings back memories of my Brooklyn of the early 50’s on Pennsylvania and Belmont Avenues, before moving into the Boulevard Projects, where we’d also play the game. Do our children even understand the dynamics of the game?

I remember it well.. Steeplchase was where my Irish grandfather worked. we got in free, and had the round punchcards to deal with.. I loved the slide with all the spinning disks at the end.. Also the Horse race, and like you said, the air thing.. Banana custard, Nathans, and pink popcorn still make my mouth water.. Not to mention, when we were kids, and going up the first hill on the Tornado Coaster, “look to the left” was said buy the guys.. It was a nude sun thing for whatever we kids could see.. 🙂

anyone remember SPUD everyone…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 6, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 6, 1999

anyone remember SPUD everyone had a number and there was 1 “ghost nuymber” someone would throw a kickball in the air and scream a number, say “7”, well everyone would run as fast as they could, except “7” they would run tward the ball and pick it up and immidietly scream “SPUD” then everyone else would have to stop int heir tracks, and the “7” would have 3 steps to get as close to someone else as they could then throw the ball at them, if they hit them they got a letter S P U or D, and if you missed, you got the letter, once you get SPUD your out. and your number retires as a ghost number — if a ghost number is screamed its free game to anyone who wants to get the ball.

Loved buck buck.. Had the guys who would run up the backs and take a high jump to collaspe the line.. We all cheated about how many horns were up.. Strange, but looking back, I never known a kid to get really hurt.. Being the pillar was cool…. Mike

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 6, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 6, 1999

We, generation “Y” had “skip-its” its a ufo looking globe about the size of a semi flattened soft ball connected to a rod that was connected to a loop that was stuck around your ankle, you swung it around you and jumped over it. and it counted how many jumps you had, pretty cool if your 8..

Yo, slick…I actually laughed out loud upon reading freshgo’s entry (gottem, needem, etc.). There’s nothing quite like having something sweet dredged up from deep down in memory. Thanks, I needem.
