Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 22, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 16, 2019

I grew up in the Red Hook Projects. My friends and I used to hang out in Coffee Park. I went to P.S.27 and graduated from there in 1953. Anyone out there who graduated from 27 in that year?

Hi Valerie, Since you were in Sunset Park, did you guys ever go out on Thanksgiving, in the Halloween Theme, and go door to door asking “Anything for Thanksgiving” .. We did that.. Dressed up like Hobo’s trying to get more candy.. Sounds stupid, but true. I never heard of anyone else doing that.. Except, Tom above.. 🙂

We used to take the skates apart and nail them to a 2 x 4 , and nail a wooden carton to the other side of the 2 x 4, and add a couple of sticks to the box for Steering, and Whalla,, we had a scooter..

I grew up in Sunset Park too,I don’t know if the game was unique to the area but remember playing it.Sometimes you would hit the stick and it would bounce back closer to you making your next shot a lot easier.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 22, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 22, 1999

to butirfli one end of the key served to make the skate longer or shorter when you flipped it over and adjusted the nut.If I remember correctly most of the girls on my street used to use an old shoelace as a necklace to wear the key. There was also a felt material on the underside of the clamps,I think it was either red or green.I haven’t thought about those skates in many years until I read your posting.

Does anyone remember metal…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 22, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Does anyone remember metal roller skates? Lobster claw-like clamps held the toe of your shoe or sneaker, and those clamps had to be tightened with a large metal key. Us girls wore the key around our neck. A friend and I used to roller skate around our neighborhood and local parks. The friend had an older brother, who took pleasure in taunting us and trying to trip us, by sticking his out his foot, just as we were gliding by. ;(

I grew up in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I also remember playing “hit the stick”. We also played with the icecream stick, standing on opposite ends of 2 cement squares, and trying to hit the stick with a “spalding” ball. I think the winner would be the first one to score 10 or maybe 20 points.
