I gotta tell ya, the hair…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 29, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

I gotta tell ya, the hair on the back of my neck stood up after reading some of the stories.I grew up in Jamaica, Queens( born in 51 ). The way the world is today, we need more sites like this. Skelly was the best! We would fill the cap ( beer caps ) with melted crayon then rub real hard on the sidewalk ( aerodynamic ):) After going around back and forth and making around center,( if you landed on a line you started over )the thrill of blasting was the best! This is great!!!!! Keep it up. I’m gonna look for pictures right now. Thanks

I, too, lived in Brooklyn, and never heard of this game. Perhaps, no one could afford to part with their heels.

Other games with baseball cards: 1) Trying to flip a card the farthest and winning the round. How to cheat: glue two cards together. 2) Set a card leaning against a wall and try to knock it down from across the area (often done in the lobby of an apartment building). Winner keeps everyone’s attempts. 3) Flipping across the lobby–closest to the opposite wall wins all the cards that were flipped that round. 4) A game I could never appreciate: Two players–one flips a card to the ground at his feet, noting whether it was heads (the picture of the ball player) or tails (the statistics). The opponent would have to match the toss–heads or tails–to win your card, or fail to match it and lose his.

We used rubber heels if we could find them to throw. They were great as they didn’t slide either.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 28, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 28, 1999

1. Red Light, Green Light, One Two Three One person (in charge) Turns their back on the rest and counts 1,2,3 red or green light and turned around quickly. if it was red light the rest had to freeze. If green keep running until “red light” illegal movement =disqualification 2. Giant Steps A leader could dictate how many giant or small steps contestants could take. The winner was decided arbitrarily by the leader….although we’d never admit that then

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 28, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 28, 1999

In East Cambridge MA. we called it “Outs”. There was a mini-slide in the middle of the stairs with the o/o bounds marked on either side by a driveway/curb. Like anonymous above, only “errors ” caused a dispute on runner advances. A homerun was rare but doable- down the driveway. Hit the window in right field foul territory and the scary old man’d start swearing and rapping on the window… We used the same location for street hockey before there was enough of us to take over the BBall courts.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 28, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

A major snow storm in 1960 shut the schools and gave us enough snow and time to build a series of igloo-like structures with connecting tunnels all along our Brooklyn street. We were a bunch of happy and wet, young “Eskimos.” It also gave us the best opportunities to go down the ever-terrifying COMMANDO HILL on our shiny sleds, in cardboard boxes and on our tushies.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on April 27, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsApril 27, 1999

Anybody remember “underducks”? We would push our friends on the playground swings until they were going really high, then on your last push, run under the swing in an “underduck”. We loved being both an underducker and an underduckee. And I remember those “death-defying” feats, too, but on the monkey bars (the ones that you are supposed to traverse arm over arm from one side to the other – are those monkey bars?) we used to walk on top of them (we considered that to be quite a cool trick!), and also lie down on them face down, hold on with our hands and flip our legs over our bodies and flip to the ground. That was “neat”!!

Thanks jbaez97. I didn’t remember Miss Lucy until you wrote it out. I also remember chewing gum chains and peeling off the paper from the foil and it also contributed to my first run in with delinquency. Thank God my mother never found out!

I remember “Oh you can’t get to heaven.” nose — garden hose, eyes — pizza pies. Made lots of bus rides pass
