Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 8, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

It was really Old Mr. Johnson, who had troubles of his own… He had a yellow cat that wouldn’t leave his home He tried and he tried to give the cat away He gave it to a man going far, far away, BUT The cat came back the very next day, Oh the cat came back; they thought he was a goner But the cat came back; he just couldn’t stay away. Loved that song. Does anyone remember the song about the guy named Charlie who got lost on the Boston subways (MTA) – “He never returned, no he never returned, and his fate is still unlearned, he will ride forever ‘neath the streets of Boston, he’s the man who never returned…” That’s all I remember.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 7, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsJanuary 3, 2020

In the ’60’s in Far Rockaway, Spaldeens were to Pensie Pinkies as the Yankees were to the Mets. Spaldeens were the official, respected standard. Pensie Pinkie were the unorthodox, seamless, higher bouncing challenger. Personally, I preferred the livlier Pensie Pinkie. Especially for punchball. Also much easier to control in “squeeze” and “spin” games like box baseball. As I recall, the Spaldeen had a rougher, powdery-when-new feel to it. It was firmer and tended to get brittle more easily than the Pensie Pinkie. The Pensie Pinkie was smoother, super-lively when new, more easily squeezed. When the Pensie Pinkie got old, it lost much of its bounce and was very easily squeezed. Still, nothing like a new Pensie Pinkie. It would just fly off of your fist. Pensie Pinkie’s are a lot like the consistency of a new racquet ball, but pink instead of blue.

I HATED those wooden seesaws! Some “friend” would always goad you into getting on the other side and jump off when your side was high in the air so you’d come crashing to the ground. NOT fun. Sigh…children can be so cruel…. 🙂 – webdiva

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 7, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 13, 2014

Did anyone ever play “War”? Or “Steal the Old Man’s Bundle?” I had two brothers and sisters and we used to play “War” for hours. You dealt out all the cards and then each played a card. The higher card won and the winner took both cards. If the cards were equal, you had to say “I declare War”. Then each dealt out three cards face down and one card face up. Highest card wins all the cards. Object of the game is to get all the cards. – webdiva

I think the spaldeen was made differently than the Pensie Pinkie. I don’t think the Pinkie had a 2 halves joined together like the Spalding did.
