I grew up in the 80s/early 90s, so the scooters I remember are probably different… I still have mine. It’s blue, with a wide standing area, and wheels like tiny bike wheels. I looove that scooter!

Oh yeah, don’t forget about Duck, duck, goose. They actually played this with dogs at a dog training class I was in! I think they called it dog dog bone or something, same basic rules, except you have to heel your dog around the circle, and all the other dogs were on sit-stays next to their owners, facing out towards you…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 1, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 1, 2000

The way we played Red Rover when I was in gradeschool (not so very long ago 🙂 was the two teams would be on each side, hands linked. Then someone from one team would shout “Red rover, red rover let ____(name of kid) come over!” Then the kid they named had to run over and try to break the chain (no going under allowed). Usually they know where the weakest link is… If you don’t get through, you have to get in the chain. The game ends when one team has everyone. I think if you DID break through, you would get to go back to the other team? Or maybe you sit out the rest?

I forgot to mention, we used to play Red Rover at recess with the whole class (18-25 kids) or sometimes with more than one grade of people, making a loooong game!

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 1, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

I remember these games: Freeze tag, tag (lots of versions!), hide and seek, keep away, King of the mountain (on snow-hills in winter, it involved pushing off whoever tries to ‘take over’ the ‘mountain’), red rover (I loved that one!). Some tag stuff: -you had to decide whether or not ‘electricity’ was allowed- whether or not, if someone is on goal, they can grab someone who isn’t and make them ‘safe’. -the rhyme to get people off a goal: “One two three, get off my father’s apple tree or you are it” -I remember kids would call goal different things… I always used to call it glue, and someone called it ghoul! I played these in the 80s/ early 90s

Did anyone here play two-square…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 1, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 1, 2000

Did anyone here play two-square or four-square? My friends and I loved it… There were TONS of special moves like Rocket, where you bounce the ball a certain way, and before each game we would pick who’s ‘King’ (if it’s four-square) and then they’d make up the rules- which moves you can and can’t do, etc… My friends and I made up some moves that would get people out for sure, so they were always ‘outlawed’, we could only do them if they didn’t count in the game- like Skyscraper- you shout out SKYSCRAPER! and WHACK the ball at the ground as hard as you could, so it’d bounce up 10 ft. And whiplash or something, where you’d whip the ball out so it’d land right at the far end of the other person’s square.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 1, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 1, 2000

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. Say it fast: She sells seashells by the seashore. Rubber baby buggy bumpers– this has got to be one of the hardest!

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 1, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

The way I always played Chinese jumprope was “In, out, side by side, on, in, out.” In- jump with both legs inside of the ropes. Out- jump out of the ropes. Side by side- Straddle one side of the rope (with one leg on each side of it), then straddle the other side of the rope. On- step on one side of the rope with each foot. out-jump out to one side. If you did it without messing up, then the rope gets higher, and so on. I was ok at double dutch, I didn’t get to play much because most of the kids I knew didn’t play it. I was GREAT at turning the ropes, though, hehe…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 1, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Hey, isn’t it interesting how different people know slightly different rhymes? I guess some people hear it differently, or they add things on to it. It’s kinda like that game “telephone” I’m 18, so most of the games/rhymes I learned in the 80s it’d be interesting to know how long these were around…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 1, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

The patty cake I heard was Patty cake, patty cake, baker’s man bake me a cake as fast as you can. Roll it and pat it, and mark it with a B, put it in the over for baby and me! It was a game to play with little babies…
