I remember playing Chinese…
I remember playing Chinese jumprope when i was like in the 4th and 5th grade, and I remember making it out of rubberbands….you would make it long enough to make it into a huge circle so you could wrap it around your ankles and someone elses, standing at least a yard away. You would be in teams and both members of the team had to win to go to the next level. You would jump in with both feet, then jump out with both feet, synchronized of course, then move your right foot in so you would only be over one side of the ropes, then jump to the other side with both feet. Then jump up with both feet and land on the rope, at the same time. At that point the other member would do the same. If both members passed, then you would go to the next level. The levels would be from: ankles, knees, right below the behind, then waist, underarms, and neck. i don’t think it got that far, but just in case some girl who could jump high, I think that was the last level. If one member missed, then they would switch and if it became your turn again, you start all over again. this was the version I used to play…=)

Hi, I remember…
Hi, I remember fragments to a couple of skipping songs we sang as children in Quebec. One went something like this: Tinker, taylor Soldier, sailor Doctor, lawyer Beggarman, thief — — — — — — …..Merchant, chief And, another fragment: Mississippi M-I-S-S-I S-S-I- P-P-I Do these snippits ring a bell with you? If so, I’d love to know how the whole song truly goes. Thanks, Ros

I live in Alpine but grew up in NY in a place called Spanish Harlem. I can remember as a little girl going into other neighborhoods to watch my father and his buddies challenge other teams. Most of the games were played on Sundays and the people would all take the cars off the block so the guys could play. I was Daddy’s girl and also the son he never had. Most of the games were played for big money, each man putting up a certain amount. My favorite place was Little Italy. They played right on Mott and Hester Street and I remember having a huge crush on a player from the other team. I was all of 8 years old. Those were the good old days. People would be hanging ot windows and families would be on their fire escapes with salami sandwiches to cheer their teams on. Win or lose, everyone had a good time and never did I witness any fights or hard feelings. I was always proud of Daddy and even though he is to old for stickball I’m still proud to be his little girl.
