Grew up in East New York…Alabama and Blake. Went to PS 174.. JHS 149 (my older sister went to JHs 109 and to Jefferson, 1957) and then we moved to Eastern Parkway in 1961 and I graduated from Wingate in 1964…. Played my guitar and figured I’d become a folksinger and call myself Suzanne Martin… Looking for Jerry Hertz and Bobby Stone, …. found Ira Moscowitz, Phil Sobrane and Irene Mossberg….Still have my ‘spaldeen’ and top…. I played ball with the boys and double-dutch with Leonore, Irene, Michelle and Dorothy… get in touch if you’re out there. Sheindie (Suzie Kusnetz Bobele)

came across this site by accident while looking for hopscotch info. I had forgotten all about chinese ropes and will now be buying a bag of rubberbands as soon as poss so I can show my two young daughters how to play. I don’t recall singing rhymes but I do remember saying jump, split, jump etc as we crossed the ropes. We also used the rope as a simple jump strting at ankle height then ‘kneezies’, thighs, waist, underarm. not many girls got past that.

If anyone knows the specific rules to Russian or Seven Up, as I guess others call it, could you please e-mail me? My aunt taught me that game when I was a child and we spent many hours playing it, but I can’t remember all the rules or the order. Playing Russian with Aunt Margie is one of my happiest childhood memories. I’d love to teach my kids…

I have been playing stick ball for a long time. When we play, we play in school yards where there are painted bases and base lines. But we play real baseball style-If there is a ground ball the ball must be thrown to the base for an out and so on. We have a high fence in left about 13ft and its 180ft away in the center there is no fence and the ball just keeps going but in right is the school and half way up is the home run about 20ft high and 190ft deep.
