I remember it as… Down…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on October 29, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsMarch 15, 2019

I remember it as… Down town baby. Down by the roller coaster. Sweet sweet baby. Don’t let ‘ya momma know. Shimmee shimmee cocoa ba. Shimme shimme p-ie. Oooh cheechie wawa tabisco. I’ve got another tabisco. Just like cherry pie tabisco. The “clapping rhythm” of this was one hand face down, other hand face up, while your partner did the opposite. Therefore, you were clapping with your partner but hands were vertical, not horizontal. Also, with the word tabisco you would take your right hand and make a motion like an up calling an out, thumb pointed over your shoulder and then down. I have NO idea why it was done this way, or what any of the words mean. However, it was something that definitely occupied time during recess for many years.

Hi. Growing up there were…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on October 29, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Hi. Growing up there were 2 rhymes that started with “Miss Lucy”. One was “Miss Lucy had a steamboat. The steamboat had a bell.” and continued on from there. For kids growing up in the 70’s, it was a BIG deal to do this one, because the endings to all the lines were “dirty words” that were actually the first syllables to normal words that started off the next line. For instance, to finish the first verse and start the second one…”Miss Lucy went to Heaven and the steamboat went to Hell {end of verse 1} {start of verse 2} “O operator, please give me number 9.” Making it a very long-drawn out “Hello”. Again, very tame by today’s standards but back then, very risque. The OTHER Miss Lucy went, “Miss Lucy had a baby, she named it Tiny Tim. She put him in the bathtub to see if he could swim.” HOWEVER, I don’t remember the rest of this one. Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so, help would be appreciated.

To Sharon in re 1, 2, 3, alera. I remembered my sisters playing this game in the early 60’s in The Bronx. I always thought it was >> 1, 2, 3 A lariat (a cowboy’s rope). Maybe that’s how they convinced me to play a girl’s game

…When You learn the fine…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on October 22, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

…When You learn the fine art of attaining New York cuisine. Most school kids that I knew couldn’t afford to eat out much for lunch (beyond pizza slices). School lunch was one-dimensional, which left going home for lunch. According to what “cultural mood” our taste buds were in, we’d drop in on the best cooks/mothers among our crew of friends. For instance, if I was feeling under the weather I’d go to my girl friend’s house for her Sandy’s grandma’s Matzoh ball soup with challah or to Cheng’s mom for her killer rice noodle soup. Most mothers were stay-at-home back then and great cooks, so kids would just drop in for lunch with their buddies, for international cuisine. There’s absolutely nothing like home cooked pierogis, kasha varnishkas (excuse any mispells), pigeon peas and rice, arepas, tostones, jerk chicken, scrambled eggs over brown rice and teriyaki sauce, tofu burgers…. whatever the culinary craving, there was a mom in my school or neighborhood who could do it right. No overpriced meal in the world could every equal those of skilled family cooks. I still drop-in on friend’s moms for home-cooked delicacies. One time I walked-in on the wrong meal… blood sausage with apple sauce at home of my Fountainbleu France friend, Jeffrey. While hitch hiking in Italy, a French girl and I were asked to dine at the mountainside home of an elderly lady who blew our minds with home-made margherita pizzas with a bottle of red and white. The olive oil and small dish of tomato sauce that she gave us while waiting was enough to make us cry. My first sushi experience was in Alaska, at the home of my Hawaiian friend. Too many beautiful culinary moments to mention.

We often played “Colors” with baseball cards. You would flip your cards vs. an opponent and depending how the colors of the team logos appeared, one or the other player won a certain number of cards from the other. I guess it was a little like poker. East Flatbush, 1960’s

Hey, MConroy! A wall…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on October 21, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

Hey, MConroy! A wall of the Holy Cross cemetery abutted my backyard on E. 42nd St. near Snyder Ave. We lived on a dead end with yet another wall of Holy Cross at the end of the block, which was our stickball backstop. Yeah, we played “Chestnuts” all the time. Heck, I’ve still got a 10,068 Killer in my freezer from back in the 1960’s. Now, you didn’t want a fresh chestnut, it needed to be somewhat hardened from laying around on the ground for a while. You poked a hole in it with a long carpenter’s nail. Then you took your long shoelace and knotted one end and slipped it thru to anchor the chestnut. The defender held their chestnut straight down on the long string and the offender wrapped their string around their fingers with enough left to strike held through the index and middle fingers. No laquering allowed!!! From reading all the posts here, it seems like this game has it’s roots in antiquity.

Has anyone ever heard of…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on October 18, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2001

Has anyone ever heard of a jack game referred to as around the world? When I was growing up it referred to bounceing the ball, picking up the jacks and circleing the ball befor it hit the ground again.
