From Goldy (my street name)…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on August 18, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

From Goldy (my street name) Back in the forties in Brownsville in Brooklyn, we made our own scooter. We would get a crate from the fruit and vegetable store, a 2×4 was nailed to it and half a skate, one in front and one in the back nailed to the 2×4. If we could, we would make handlebars from 2 pieces of wood nailed in a “v” shape on top of the crate. We would then decorate the front of the crate with bottle caps. We could run errands for grandma by putting packages inside the crate. That was all we could afford for transportation.

Reading this brought back…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on August 17, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsMarch 15, 2019

Reading this brought back amazing memories – my 5 and 6 year old daughters have been learning some jumprope/hand clapping rhymes and I was trying to teach them some I remembered from my youth – this helped me fill in a lot of holes. Some I remember but didn’t see here are: So-So and So-So Sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G First comes Love Then comes marriage Then comes So-So in a baby carriage Sucking his thumb Wetting his pants Doing the hula hula dance! Does anyone remember: Oh I wish I was a little bottle of Coke (repeat) I’d go slurpy, slurpy, slurpy and make everybody burpy Oh I wish I was a little bottle of Coke Oh I wish I was a little bar of soap (repeat) I’d go slidey, slidey, slidey, under everybody’s nightie Oh I wish I was a little bar of soap Oh I wish I was a little piece of glass (repeat) I’d go cut-ty, cut-ty, cut-ty, and make everybody bloody Oh I wish I was a little piece of glass etc. I know there were more verses, the elementary school kids used to sing it on the bus when I was in kindergarten 1970-71.

Does anyone remember having a Ginny and Ginnette Dolls. Ginny was the older sister and Ginnette was a baby. Ginny had brown curly hair. This would have been in the 50’s

In Bensonhurst Brooklyn…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on August 17, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 14, 2014

In Bensonhurst Brooklyn in the late 60s and early 70s we evolved our bottle caps from the traditional wax(or crayon) and penny filled ones to using medicine caps (pre childproof)filled with pennies and clay. We found that you could get a much faster smoother slide with better accuracy for longer shots. Has anyone used this type of cap?

> This guy would melt down Lead Fishing sinkers into the caps > the sodder cap I’m assuming that both of these caps involve melting lead or solder into a cap. I always wanted to do this but my parents wouldn’t let me operate a soldering iron in my youth, much less a plumber’s torch (which you need to melt a lead sinker effectively). However, in my adulthood and, as I mentioned earlier, armed with a Home Depot credit card, I have melted a fishing sinker into a bottlecap. The blasting power is tremendous, and you need relatively little lead (I filled a cap “to the brim” and it was so heavy as to be nearly unshootable). You sure as heck melt all the paint off the cap in the process, though! When I got a little older and was allowed to use a soldering pencil, I used it to melt the wax/candle into bottlecaps… probably safer than using matches, IMHO! Kids, don’t try this at home. Please look forward to the Streetplay instructional video series “Streetplay Skully 101” coming to this site in the next few months. -Hugh M. McNally

boccie also spelled…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on August 14, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsAugust 14, 2000

boccie also spelled BOCCI, OR BOCCE, Italian bowling game that is especially popular in Piedmont and Liguria and is also played in Italian communities in the United States, Australia, and South America. The governing organization is the Unione Federazione Italiane Bocce. The first world championships were held at Genoa, Italy, in 1951. The boccie court, or campo, is about 75 feet long by 8 feet wide (23 by 2.4 m), with a level surface of sand or clay, enclosed with boarded ends and sides about 18 inches (45 cm) and 12 inches (30 cm) high, respectively. Each player or team in turn rolls or tosses four wooden, metal, or composition balls, called bocce, each 4-5 inches (10-13 cm) in diameter, toward a smaller ball, called the boccino, or pallino. The object, as in the game of lawn bowls, is to bring the ball to rest nearer the pallino than an opponent’s ball, to protect a well-placed ball, or to knock aside an opponent’s ball. Rebounds from the side walls are permitted. At the end of a round, a side receives a point for every ball nearer the pallino than the nearest opposing ball. The game usually proceeds until one side has 12 points.

Reporting from Parkchester…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on August 10, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

Reporting from Parkchester in the 60’s. We played in the courtyard of the U-shaped PS126. Singles, doubles, triples by hitting the opposite wall above the windows of each level. A narrow band below the roof was a home run, but on the roof was an out, for the ball was lost, and the batter had to run down to the candy store to buy a new Spaldeen ($.25?). If nobody had money, the game was over. My best stickball story is from the Saturday afternoon when I was having such a blast playing that I forgot my altar boy assignment for the 5:00PM mass at St. Raymond’s. My mom was so ripped when I strolled home at 7:00PM that I had to go to three consecutive masses the next day. From humiliation came responsibility, I guess. Great website, great memories from the Bronx.
