Seeing all the postings…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 11, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

Seeing all the postings bring back many memories. As a matter of fact every game I played as a kid is mentioned on this Website. Great! My fondest memories of Johnny on the Pony was during high school. We always played before classes begun and having picked our teams, there was always some guys waiting for the right moment to sneak in and take a shot. It was usually some big character trying to get his jollies off by piling on and breaking the “ponies” back. We usually had to line up again because no one saw the guy jumping on. I also remember being kicked in the head a few times by some wild cowboy type who came charging with arms and legs flailing…Late 1960s were some great and heady times.

Does anyone remember Mother,…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 9, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Does anyone remember Mother, May I? One kid is “the mother” and stands at one end, and all the other kids stand at the other end, about 30 ft. away. Mother says, “I want Jim to take six giant steps” and then Jim has to say “Mother, May I?” Mother says, “yes, you may”. If he doesn’t ask, he forfeits his turn. There were baby steps, scissors steps, banana steps, ??? The first kid to reach Mother wins. You could try to sneak forward, but if Mother caught you, you had to go back to the start.

How I remember “calling…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 9, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 13, 2014

How I remember “calling out”! This was on Frank St. in North Olmsted, Ohio in the 50s. We had lots of kids on the street and everyone did this in a singsong manner. We were always outdoors, going back & forth to each other’s houses, playing on the street and in yards. Sometimes we’d just lie on the grass and look at clouds, or try to find 4-leaf clovers.

Turtle master is a playground…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 6, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsMarch 6, 2004

Turtle master is a playground game when i was a kid, now its become a drinking game for me and my friends… The rules are, the turtle master begins by saying one line and you go around in a cirle repeating the line without messing up, if you mess up you have to drink and start all over again! TURTLE MASTER: one fat hen a couple duck 3 brown bear 4 running hare 5 fat fickle females sitting on a stump 6 simple simones sitting sipping scotch 7 sinbad sailors, sailing, sailing the 7 seas 8 egotistical egglets echoing in egotistical extasy 9 nude nubians nibbling nuts nads and nictoine 10: you’ll never be a turtle master or a turtle masters friend but you’ll always be a turtle master til the mother f-ing end!

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 4, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

I still have a 1966 pimple ball. We used two driveways for boxball in case we got chased from one or there was hanging wash in the way. Our stickball field was a bank parking lot behind Castor Ave; homers had to cross the lot and the street. Handball was played at recess and lunchtime at Carnell. For Deadbox, we put an extra cork in bottlecaps for added weight and control. We called manhunt “wolf”; kids on my street today play the same game and call it “freedom.” Running bases was for all the kids (including girls) of all ages, not just us “athletes.”

I grew up in South Boston…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 3, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsJanuary 3, 2020

I grew up in South Boston “Southie’ and the white pimple ball (circus ball) was more expensive 15 cents and desirable than the pinky (pennsey?) 10 cents. Circa 1960. We played fast pitch stickball against a brick wall with a chalk marked strike zone and a short field. We played slow ball stickball in a bigger parking lot. Both ways meant some broken windows. Also played handball and “hin-do” to us was a “hin-da” Local accent of course. (Hindrance) We also used the pimple ball for “scrub”, previously referred to as punch ball and another game, “off the steps”. Finally, halfball when the pimple ball lost its bounce. Pinkies were rarely, if ever, used for halfball, and were a poor substitute for all the other games. We also scoured all the flat roofs we could get on and did all we could to get the balls out of the sewers. All and all great memories. You handball guys from NYC must remember Paul Haber, boy, kill shot king. He used to do exhibitions against the local talent at the L Street Bathhouse.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 2, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 18, 2014

anybody remember any of the rhymes where everyone would put one foot in and someone would recite a rhyme while sort of tapping each person’s foot and when the rhyme stopped you’d take your foot out until there was just one person left and that person would be “IT”?

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on March 2, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

had a flashback to playing behind snyder high school in jersey city, nj……i did hit a shot toward right field that hit the 2nd floor of the high school…..in my minds eye it was a tape measure shot that was on a par with mickey mantle’s tape measure blasts…..i was a little guy at the time maybe 10 yrs old……but it was a shot to be proud of and had it not been obstructed by that wall i wonder how many sewers it would have traveled……so take that cowboy! and a few yrs later i hit one off my friend pablo behind p.s.#9……a shot to straight away center field…..cleared the fence and landed in the lot that ran along the tracks near what was then railroad ave i think it was called
