I remember summers in my…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on December 27, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsDecember 4, 2019

I remember summers in my neighborhood and how we couldn’t wait for school to get out so we could spend all our time at the park! The park on the conduit in South Ozone Park was our place! Boy we really had fun there! We did everything there, we played handball until the wee hours of the morning when we were teenagers, we could sit on the benches and play chess or checkers on those tables that had the boards set right in them, I thought that was the coolest thing, you didn’t need to bring anything to the park just your bike and friends! I now live in Arizona and have lived in Utah for years and the first time I saw a park in Utah I thought how strange it was that there were no parks like we had and I felt sad that the kids were missing alot of fun! I long for those hot summer days sometimes when life was easier and all that concerned us was a good Pensy-Pinkie or spalding and if we could get to the park before the big guys so we could get a court.I loved growing up in New York and wouldn’t trade it for the world!

I grew up playing Skully…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on December 24, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

I grew up playing Skully in Brooklyn and Queens in the late fifties. We were never sure how the name of the game was spelled, because there was no occasion to ever actually write the name. We used to melt candle wax into the bottle caps to give them weight, and for some reason, the beer bottle caps were always considered to be the best to have. One of the terms of the game that I haven’t yet seen in various versions of written rules I’ve come across is “Heading for the Hills”. This was when your opponent became a killer and needed to hit you three times in a row to get you out, so you would keeping blasting your own cap down the block so he could hopefully never catch you. “Heading for the Hills” was not really “fair” and usually not allowed but sometimes it was, depending on the mood of the players that day.

We did “once-twice-three-shoot”…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on December 23, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsDecember 23, 2004

We did “once-twice-three-shoot” but choosing up usually meant that opposing captains would take turns alternating hand over hand on a bat. Whichever guy’s hand reached the end would have to swing it in a circle three times without letting go. If successful, that person would get to pick first (At least that’s what my feeble memory tells me).

I’m also from Washington Heights and we called it “slug.” I think you could hit the ball three times in your own box before you had to send it down the line. It’s awesome to have these memories shared by others.

I have read with great interest your messages, most of them are registered in my book “Barnet i liv og lek” (The Child in life and play) published by The Universcity Press in Oslo. My archive copy is datet 1983 the 3rd edition. However, I regret to say that it is not in sale anymore. The ISBN number is 82-00-06394. The melody that are used for En, to, tre, O’Leavy (One, two three O*leavy) are One little, two little, three little Indians, four little, five litle, six little Indian, seven little, eitht little, nine little Indians, ten little Indian boys – men. My name is Alice, my husbands name is Arne etc are used in the same way in Norway. The names are of course Norwegian. Hope this can be of interest for someone?

I found this site while trying to find rhymes to a game I used to play in the 70s growing up in the UK. We called it “2 ball” – it sounds a lot like the 1,2,3 Alary game a lot of people have mentioned here. We had 2 balls that we sort of juggled against a wall, while chanting rhymes. The more difficult ones involved you missing bouncing one of the balls on the ground, or under your leg, or on the ground while spinnnig around just in time to catch them, while keeping the other ball going against the wall. Does anyone remember any of the rhymes? My daughter would love to learn some, but for the life of me, I can’t remember…

My first kiss came out of…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on December 18, 2004 by Streetplay DiscussionsDecember 18, 2004

My first kiss came out of nowhere. We’d both been invited to a college party of no spectacular proportions where a bunch of our mutual friends were congregated. I liked dancing, but I must admit that I liked seeing him even more. He’s a terrific person and can always make me laugh. It was nearly night’s end when he decided that it was time for him to go home. I walked him out to his car and he offered to let me sit on the passenger’s side. Before I could comment on how I would miss him, he leaned in and kissed me. At first it made me feel excited and dazed, but now it’s just a warm, happy feeling I’ll remember always.
