I grew up on Ely Ave off of Edenwald in the 60’s. Man what a good time! All these games bring back some great memories, some of them I even forgot. One I did not see was something called Johnny on the pony or something like that. Anyone remember that one?

I grew up in Queens and remember my grandfather playing Bocci Ball. I now live in TN and work at an Events Facility and Bed & Breakfast. We would like to offer games like this to our guests. If anyone could give me info on the rules etc. I would greatly appreciate it.

I grew up in Long Beach on Long Island in the fifties, where we played the fast pitch version of stickball…a “strike zone” chalked on a wall and a long asphalt school yard to blast away at. We used the distance demarkation method for single-double-triple etc, and the same strikeout, caught grounder or caught fly for outs. There was no base running; stickball in Long Beach did little for aerobic fitness. We used broomsticks and two brands of pink rubber balls. Preferred was the Spaulding version, prenounced “Spauldeen.” Amazingly, “SPAULDING” was imprinted on the ball, we could all read, yet swore by that pronunciation. The other ball was the less desireable Pensy Pinky, which didn’t bounce as well, and also a had greater propensity to be disassembled by a solid top-spin whack. Two halves flew from the bat. Was that a single or a double? I was not a good hitter because I developed a tendency to flinch very early on. In my first game, as a fifth grader, I ducked a close pitch but stood up too quickly. The rebound off the wall whapped me right in the ear. Talk about sting! I can still feel it.

I grew up in the Fredrick Douglas Housing Projects on 104th St. between Columbus and Manhattan Avenues in NYC back in the late 50’s and through the sixties. I must have been really under privledged back then ’cause I’ve never even heard of a pensie pinky or anything thereabouts. Oh yeah I played StickBall, Stoopball, Punchball, hell, even Whiffleball. We even pitched and hit bottlecaps, but the only ball I ever knew was the “Spaulding” better known as the “Spauldeen” and that’s what we used, except for whiffleball of course. Anyway, there was one thing we did to old, beaten-up, dead, on their last leg spauldeen’s just before sending them to that big spauldeen factory in the sky… Does anybody out there remember “Roofin” a spauldeen!!! Oh yeah! If you had an arm and thought you could throw it up onto one of the taller 21 story project buildings you were not to be messed with!!!

Leda, You just blew my mind with “Stories”. I had forgotten all about that one. I grew up near the beach in Queens, and even we played that! We had to bounce the ball and cross the leg over for every word that started with A, or B or whatever letter it was that we were up to.

My name is Charles Petersil. I grew up in the Bronx, in an area called Highbridge. I was called Husky as a kid. I played stickball on a regular basis on Nelson Avenue, and I used to hit three sewers. I also belonged to a group known as the Satanic Dukes. If anybody remembers me, send an e-mail to me at jcpetersil [at] worldnet [dot] att [dot] net.

I grew up in Queens. My mom, who was from the Bronx, taught us a great game called Sardines. It was the opposite of hide and go seek. The person who was “it” would go out and hide somewhere. Everyone else counted to 50 or whatever, and when time was up, we all went out in separate directions and tried to find the person who was hiding, and when you found the person, you hid with them until everyone eventually is there hiding. The last person to find the group is “it” next. The name of the game makes more sense if the person who is “it” hides in a phone booth or something. Eventually everyone is packed in like a can of sardines!

I grew up in the 80s/early 90s, so the scooters I remember are probably different… I still have mine. It’s blue, with a wide standing area, and wheels like tiny bike wheels. I looove that scooter!

I grew up in the Highbridge area of the Bronx. I lived at 1050 Anderson Ave and 901 Woodycrest Ave. What great times and great memories. Playing stickball in PS73 school yard, hanging out down by the Harlem river and running around in the abandoned subway “The Shuttle” than ran under our neighborhood. Nothing in my life has topped those times and if there was a time machine I’d be there now. Rob Auerbach Colleenandrob [at] yahoo [dot] com
