I grew up in St. Albans…

I grew up in St. Albans Queens in the 50-60’s I can’t remember how one got the points. It had something to do with what you had left in the hand. But I remenber drawing for hard or soft knucks eg red or black. There was the slap with the flat of the pack. There was the smack with the edge of the pack (the scrape???) then there was putting your hand down on the ground and the deck on the fingersnails and then the winner stepped on the deck. Then there was the flying knucks…. A nice sadistic game that turned boys into men

I grew up in St. Albans, Queens on Galway ave in the 50-60s. I played war. Much like web diva says but it was more dramatic when you had two equal cards. First you and the other player said I and put a card face down then you said de (pronounced dee) and put a card face down. Then you said clare and put a card face down. Then the big finish you both yell war and throw down the fourth card face up and see who wins. Boy I remember playing Knucks. I believe it is short for knuckles. I am not certain but I believe you ended up with points for not winning and the points depended on which cards you had in your hand. The type of knucks you got depended on the point total. If it was low you got slapped on the knuckles with the flat of the deck. If it was higher you got smacked on the knuckles with the edge of the deck. Then there was the worst. Putting your hand on the ground and the deck on the fingernails and someone stepping on the deck. Nothing like a good sadistic game to bring back fond memoires. Someone must remember how to play.

I grew up a suburb kid in California, have heard of stickball, never played. I loved reading about all your fond memories of these games, makes me wish I had been around to play too. I would like to guess that the origin of the name Pensie Pinky comes from the fact that the Pennsylvania Keystone was printed on the ball, Pensie might be a nickname for Pennsylvania (?).

Yo Nieves from Booklyn.Much respect to you.But the reason You dont like the spalding is that the ones ther are making now are nothimg like the one from the days.I grew up on the lower east side in nyc in the 70s.The spalding they use to make was made in such a way that you could not squeeze it.If you played stickball or stoop it use to take off.The new ones are nothing like the old ones.If I ever get a hand on a old school ball I will write you and send one to you.Take care Ralph LES

I grew up in Philadelphia…

I grew up in Philadelphia and I remember part of another “skin” game, similar to what you describe. You used someone’s forearm and you planted a garden (or something like that). As you said “first, you rake” you scratched the person’s arm, then you flicked as you “planted”, you spat, to “water”, slapped to “pat” down the ground. Eventually, red marks, (and a good planting left welts!) would result in the “harvest”. I can’t remember this exactly, because it wasn’t very nice, but it was clever!

I grew up in the 70s in South Philly, and yes, we played this game, but we called it “Refrigerator”. It was one of the games played at dusk, because we had to stay “in front of the house”. We would stand against the wall of a house which was on the side of the street without parking. The person who was It would stand, opposite us, against a parked car. Then, we would all run to the car and back. We would say “In my refrigerator, I have some_____ (milk, dirty socks, etc).”

I run a daycare in Ohio, and the kids are ALWAYS BORED…..lol I tell them to play…they just do not get it! I grew up in Kings Park Long Island in the 70’s, so I am teaching them Skully, and how to catch pennies off your elbow. I still have a beloved blue ball from the 80’s. I do not know why we started going to the blue ball, but remember everyone getting them and I still had the pinkie. I was poor…lol Could not afford a new ball! I do not remember what the game “composition A” is but remember the name of it, and that I played it. Can someone remind me how to play it….Also if there are any other kool games to pass on to the kids of 2000 let me know!

Does anyone remember this…

Does anyone remember this game? It was played from curb to curb. Any number of players could play. They would all line up on the street curb and shout “What’s in the icebox”? A caller would shout out items like “eggs”, everyone would run to the other curb. But the caller would also say things like “chair”. If anyone ran after hearing this, they would be “out”. This went on until there was one person left (who did not run or even move on a word that was not found in an icebox). I grew up in South Philly and remember it well. I am finding this site very nostalgic, a trip back to the late 50’S. Thanks.

I grew up in Brooklyn on McDonald Ave. The F train ran in front of my house. To get change (or the key you dropped) from the gratings, we would use something like a small lock (for weight) and some bubblegum (the kind with Bazooka Joe). This worked pretty well-that gum was sticky.

I grew up in Chelsea in NYC and we played a game called Russia. It was played against a wall with a “spaldine”(as we called it). Has anyone played that game?
