Dave B from Sothwest Philly. We played all of those games and it was great. All you needed was a pimple ball and one other guy and you could play games for hours. How many times did we dive in front of the sewer intake to keep the ball from going down the hole.If it made it down the hole the smallest guy got dangled by his feet down the sewer hole.Man did it stink.Does anyone remember “chipsies”?Whoever touched the ball last before it got lost was responsible for buying a new ball and turning it over to the previous owner.

Does anyone remember the game with the blue & red & white striped rubber ball in the toe of a stocking, and you stood with your back against the wall, and swung the ball from side to side, bouncing it against the wall – then under a leg, beside your head, etc. Did it have a name? We used to play it in the 60’s. From Toronto, Canada. – Susan

Does anyone remember Mother, May I? One kid is “the mother” and stands at one end, and all the other kids stand at the other end, about 30 ft. away. Mother says, “I want Jim to take six giant steps” and then Jim has to say “Mother, May I?” Mother says, “yes, you may”. If he doesn’t ask, he forfeits his turn. There were baby steps, scissors steps, banana steps, ??? The first kid to reach Mother wins. You could try to sneak forward, but if Mother caught you, you had to go back to the start.

Soft Pinkies rule. One of my most savored kid memories was walking back to school at lunch in NE Philly having just stole () a Pinkie from the corner candy store. Throwing a fresh pinkie at a nice tall brick wall on a spring afternoon is heaven on earth. Does anyone remember playing SUICIDE – a game with a sponge (Pinkie) ball against a wall (school wall). You would throw the ball to hit 1st the ground then 2nd the wall so the ball launched high in the air. If you caught it, the person who threw it must touch the wall b4 you get to peg him with the ball. If you try and catch someone else’s ball and miss, its your bum on the line. Still don’t know why it was called suicide. Likely many names for this game. Chris

Dear Ridgecliffe, The only circle game I know was done in a circle at girl scouts and it was Right hand palm down, left hand palm u and you slapped the hand of the person on your right( whose hand would be palm up) then slap your right thigh once then slap your left thigh once then slap the underside of your left hand once and the your palm twice. then you reverse the direction. It was sung to Edelweiss, from the Sound of Music. Does anyone remember Quacklidilioso?

Does anyone remember the bubble gum stickers that had the Mad magazine-like comic stickers which spoofed on everyday household products? I’ve been trying to find them. Please let me know if you can remember the name of this product. I used to love those things.

I’m back again. I can’t…

I’m back again. I can’t seem to stay away from this site. The one place that comes to mind when I think of the Lower East Side is Mott Street. Little Italy to most of you. We had a large group of kids that hung around together. At most we were around 15 boys and girls who ‘stayed together’. In the summer months we could be found at the corner of Mott and Broome Streets. Just hanging out on the front stoop. That’s what we called it. Just hanging around. We sat around and talked and there was always singing and dancing to someone’s radio. This was way before hand held recorders for tapes. CD’s weren’t even invented yet. (Gee, how old am I?) On Sunday we attended church and then later on took in a movie. Always a group of us went. Maybe a local movie house (Delancy or Canal Theaters) or if there was something good happening uptown – either at Radio City Music Hall or any of the other big theaters. Does anyone remember ‘The Dumps’. Also known as the Universal Theater. It was a little movie house at the corner of the Bowery and Hester Street. In the later years, it always smelled like the inside of a liquor bottle. That’s where the homeless (to be politically correct) hung out and kept warm. But I remember it when we could spend an entire Saturday there for 15 cents. We would get 20 cartoons and two full length features. Plus the Newsreel. My father would drop me off in the morning with a friend or two and then pick us up in the late afternoon. Can you imagine we were entertained for several hours for 15 cents! Try and get this now. Well, I think I’ve rambled on and on for long enough. It would be soo nice to see some replies on my posting. If you remember some of these places, maybe you were one of those kids. Take care…Jeanne from Forsythe Street
