I just learned about tip-cat from my British father-in-law last night. What are the rules, and how do you score? Also, does anyone remember playing “one old cat”,”two old cat”,”three old cat”,or any of those baseball games you could play w/out a full # of players? I’d love to know how to play those games again.

Although it’s been many years since NY was my home, I’m originally from the Bed-Stuy area of Brooklyn, but I went to school in Manhattan Beach’s PS 195. My best friend’s name was Randy, and she lived in a mansion with a yacht(I never knew we had them in urban NY), and she had 5 black maids. This amazed me because my grandmother was a black maid. I treated them all with the utmost respect. Randy and I were inseperable and I miss her and wish I could remember her last name. I left 6th grade with a 12.9 grade reading level thanks to my laid-back early 1970’s hippy teachers. That was a great school. In Bed-Stuy we played games like Skelly, where you used the plastic top of a milk jug filled with wax and flushed even by sidewalk scraping. Does anyone remember this game or what a skelly court looked like? I’d like to make one for my son.

My daughter has been singing a clapping song that I used to sing. She sings it very differently. I can’t seem to remember how I used to play it. It goes something like this. ‘When ??? was a baby, a baby, a baby ….. She went oh ah oh ah ah.’ As you can see, I don’t remember much of it. It goes on to when, I think Sally, was a toddler, teenager, adult. Does anyone remember this one?

Does anybody remember the clapping game with four girls? It went: Uno, dos-e, tres-e Hit it My mama told me six years ago There was a lady knocking at the door Saying ooh, ah, I want a piece of pie The pie too sweet, I want a piece of meat The meat too… I can’t remember the rest of it. Also there was another game where everyone stood in a ring, one hand upturned over the person on one side of you, the other hand under the upturned hand of the person on the other side of you. YOu would slap the person next you’s hand who would slap the person next to her. It would proceed around the circle until the last word of the song. The person taht got slapped at the last word would be out of the game. I can’t for the life of me remember the nonsense rhyme that went with it, though. Eenie…something? Does anyone remember this game? It was a lot of fun. Sometimes we had ten people playing this game at once.

Just found this site. I grew up in Greenwich Village. Does anyone remember: Hello, hello, hello, Sir. Meet me at the Grocer. No, Sir. Why, Sir. ‘Cause I have a cold, Sir. Where’d you get the cold, Sir. At the North Pole, Sir. What were you doing there, Sir. Catching Polar Bears, Sir. How many did you catch, Sir. One, Sir, Two, Sir, three, Sir, Etc. This was recited while bouncing your Spauldeen and crossing your leg over the ball everytime you said Sir. We would go on into the hundreds!

Does anyone remember slapball?…

Does anyone remember slapball? In the 50s in Brooklyn (Flatbush) we played this thrilling and skillful game. Three players to a team: three based 1st, 3rd and home. The pitcher stood in the middle of the gutter (we all lived on dead-end streets – a must for this game!!) and fluked (spun the ball in one of four directions, as in boxball) over a chalked in home plate. Balls and strikes were called. The batter would slap the ball hard and made sure to a) stay within the foul lines (two cars) and keep the ball from bouncing on the sidewalk first (an out). 9 innings – lots of fun.

What a trip down memory lane…thanks gals. Does anyone remember “Stories”? There was one for every letter of the alphabet….something like this: One day just as I was about to approach my Aunt Anita’s adorable astonishing apartment house, etc.The movement was similar to that of A my name is Alice but there were multiple turns. It’s amazing how I can’t tell you what I ate yesterday but I can recall almost eevery story for every letter!
