Remember scooters? I mean the REAL make-your-own type we constructed in the 60’s and not the store bought metal ones! Wooden crate was nailed onto a 4 foot 2×4 board then a scate was opened into front and back halves with each half nailed onto the ends of the 2×4. Scooters were an occasional substitute for your bike to get around. Also you were “the man” if your scooter was expertly constructed and decorated (the most popular decoration was to nail soda caps into the wood). Scooter wars were fun too. 2 guys would go at it with repeated head-to-head crashes until only one was left!

All those outdoor toys brought back memories, but here’s another one. Was it only in my neighborhood, or did anyone else take the springs from old, discarded mattresses, put them on their feet and bounce away?! We had lots of fun doing that.

We also played tops, but the greatest store brought game of all time is Battling Tops. I 34 now and still have that game. I often play when old friends come over. I wish I could find a new board. The game was an arena with four players at oposite corners (but its actually a circle). You all released your taops, they go around and bang into one another. The last one standing gets one point

We have a photo of some kids playing Knock Hockey in a summer day camp. If anyone has a good story about “Knock Hockey” or a similar game, it would make a good feature.

There was a kid with bright red hair in our neighborhood that became an incredible pogo stick jumper. He could bounce for over an hour without stopping, bopping up and down the street. You’d be sitting on the bench across the street and you’d see this orange streak boinging up and down beyond the parked cars

Wow!! Metal roller skates…

Wow!! Metal roller skates and roller skate keys worn on a shoelace around my neck. And box scooters, made from nailing the skates to the bottom of a board which also had a large wooden crate nailed to the top front. I’m back in my Brooklyn in the 50s. I’m young again. NOT!! These are such great memories that they make me want to share with my young daughtes. But I haven’t seen metal skates in any yard sale. And scooters gave way to skate boards. And extreme games. And now there’s inline skates. And what is the world coming to?
