On the lower east side we also used to stand on the swings and “pump”. Another thing was to “take someone up” where one would sit and the other one would stand and pump. I was a chicken so I usually was the one sitting, with my eyes closed. We called them sliding ponds too. How about the wooden see-saws?

Mike .. Could you elaborate on the above? I know my kids would love it. Just how and where do you attach the balloon? Thanks!

We also used to tie both ends of a long Balloon to the fork of the Bike for a deeper sound.. Harley-like.. Surprisingly the balloons held up for a while.. Thats something to show your kids today..

My best bike memory is putting baseball cards held on with clothespins on the spokes of my wheels. What a sound! Only problem was I wasn’t allowed to ride around too early on Sunday mornings, ’cause I’d wake the neighbors!

Remember those old kites, made of that cheap paper. I had an America Flag one – great flyer, lasted for a few sessions till it got caught in a tree and ripped up.

Deprived of real fishnet stockings! I wanted fishnet stockings so bad in the 60’s. So when my mother finally bought me a pair but they were not real fishnets! I don’t know where she found these but they were white with some type of opaque material over the fishnets! My mother had a knack for finding stuff that just wasn’t quite cool! The same thing happened with bell bottoms. When my mother bought me a pair they had big orange flowers on them and were horrible! I tried to dye them black but those big orange flowers came thru the dye!

Remember click-claks, footsie, hula hoop?? The click-claks were sometimes made out of glass, and they occasionally would break and injure kids. Footsie is very similar to skip-it of today.

My first kiss took place while hanging out in a parking lot with friends. We must have been in 7th grade, and I had a crush on the boy (since he had kissed me on the cheek in kindergarten). We were playing “truth or dare”…and that’s how it happened! (Nothing else ever happened between us after “the kiss”.)

I loved hanging out in the playground by my building in the Bronx. When I got older (like 16 or 17) my friends and I would hang out on the back benches (so my parents couldn’t see from the windows), and drink beer that we bought at the local bodega!
