Statues! Sure, I remember…

Statues! Sure, I remember that game and loved it. We played it in the 50s and 60s growing up in Queens. I hope kids are still playing it. As for the ball bearing roller skates, they were the best! If you couldn’t skate very well, they had enough resistance to hold you up and keep you from falling on your face, at least long enough to grab onto a fence post, lamppost or side of a building. I loved the sound they made, the little yellow “hubcaps” that were actually the ball bearings, and the ritual of tightening up the clamps to fit just so around your sneaker. I also loved wearing the key around my neck and feeling it swing back and forth as I went.

I grew up in Bensonhurst,Brooklyn in the 40’s and 50’s. Both of these games were played in the middle of the street. There were not all that many cars then. Both boys and girls participated. Does anyone else remember these games and how exactly they were played? In Statues the leader closed his or her eyes and counted to three. The players moved toward the leader as quickly as possible but when the leader looked you had to be frozen as a statue. If you got caught moving you were out. The one who could tag the leader won.I can’t seen to remember Three Feet Off the Ice But I believe we played it on roller skates. Does anyon remember ball bearing skates.

I grew up in the Bed-Stuy section of BROOKLYN and when we stoped playing streetgames we went on the roofs to fly pigeons! Tiplets, Bald heads, Tumblers and Homers were some of the birds that kept my head in the clouds when the streets started to get roughf. Did your coop ever get tapped off? Also known as having your pigeons kidnapped.

How about those little celluloid dolls that we bought for a nickle at the corner candy store(Berky’s,in my neighborhood ). This was before plastics, can you imagine? they had moveable arms and legs attached by a bit of elastic. We sat on the stoop and sewed clothing for them for hours on end, This was in the N.Bx.in the thirties . Are you out there somewhere Ruth Fox? Your father owned a lingerie factory and you had lovely scraps of silk and satin for doll dresses.

My husband and I grew up…

My husband and I grew up in Yorkville (now known as the Upper East Side.) We played marbles in the sewer covers, Points on the side of a building, Catch a Flyer Up, War, Cross over Cross Over, Old Mother Witch, Jacks, Rope including Double Dutch, Potsy, made our own Pusho (milk carton with a long stick that had old skates attached to it), stickball, handball, skating on four wheel skates that you had to attach to your shoe toe with a key, sliding down the snow in Central Park on cardboard or tops of garbage cans, swimming in the East River (not me, just my husband and his friends), Hide and Seek. And a myriad of other games whose names I don’t recall at the moment. Our playgrounds were concrete, our slides (sliding ponds), the metal swings were great and we often rode two at a time, one in front one in back and went as high as we could, and it is true some of the kids did jump off the wooden see-saws and left us hitting the ground. Ouch. In the summer the girls had a park lady who taught us how to make baskets. When it rained we went into the park building to play games. We lived near the *Farmer’s Feed Factory* and every day at 4:30 they would blow a whistle which was quitting time and all the kids would run home as it was suppertime. Who needed a watch. Many of the houses did not have steam heat so people would go down to the barges berthed in the East River and *borrow* some coal for their coal stoves. Oh, yes, another thing, we used to make *Hot Mickeys*. We would get a potato and make an *oven* out of coal, wood and leaves. Put the potato directly into the fire and cooked it until it was black. It tasted great! Everyone had their own little oven.

Does anyone remember how great Silly Putty would bounce if you rolled it up into a ball? Some years later we had the Super Ball (remember those black things we got out of the gum machines?), but rolled-up Silly Putty was the first high bouncer I can think of.

I can remember my yellow hula hoop when I was growing up in Amityville Long Island in the late 1950’s, early 1960’s. My 3 year old, 6 year old and 17 year old nieces were playing “skip it” when I went back to LI this past June. I can still remember my first bike, too. How I wish my little boys had a childhood like mine.

There are at least THREE vivid pieces of nostalgia in my memories of Bensonhurst in the 50’s. One was Ernie the Good Humor Man. He spent winters in Florida, but appeared in our neighborhood each spring in starched-white uniform, pushing a small Good Humor cart …no truck for Ernie. He actually knew all of our names and our parents’ names, never kept a book, but if you were short on change …no problem, Ernie actuall let you have a popsicle ON CREDIT!!! We also had a neat ol’ Italian guy who came around (can you dig it?) on a horse-drawn cart to sell fresh produce/vegetables. As unbelievable as it sounds HIS NAME WAS ACTUALLY “MR. BROCCOLI”!!! I’m sure the last item wasn’t isolated to Bensonhurst; we also had a guy who regularly came around with a pushcart selling junk toys. The stuff was pure crap, but we loved it. Remember buying “tatoo” transfers?

Hi. Does anyone know where I can get a pogo stick that can support an adult’s weight? Stores here in the United Kingdom seem rather bereft of such goodies. Any suggestions would be gratefuly received by email to: iburton [at] better [dot] tcom [dot] co [dot] uk Thanking you in advance. Immanuel Burton.
