MY FIRST INTELLECTUAL ROMANCE…

MY FIRST INTELLECTUAL ROMANCE T Ragos was the first guy I’d ever dated of any race who wasn’t a jock, wasn’t good looking, none of my girlfriends wanted him, had a face-full of pot marks… but I was crazy about him. He was the first guy who recited poetry. We would walk for miles along the West river talking about the many places we would travel when we were old enough to get our passports on our own. We spent hours in Central Park watching children in the playground, discussing the merits of early Bowie, Laura Nyro, The Dead Kennedys, Was not Was, Lil Green (a female blues singer from the twenties). He knew everything I knew and our interests were so similar. We were not of the same race, we were not of the same teen social status (I had my choice of jocks and friends of all races and monetary status- he got beat up and ignored) I don’t know what pulled me to him. A year later I was no longer feeling it, and started dating jocks again. But for a brief moment, I had an intellectual romance.

When I was between, say, 11 and 15, we used to play a lot of boy/girl games, like Spin the Bottle, but also Seven Minutes in Heaven, RCK, and Trust Me. I came of age in the 70s in Brooklyn and still live in Brooklyn. RCK was played in the dark, usually at home when your parents were out. You would feel around in the dark and touch a person and if he/she didn’t run, you’d kiss them. Seven Minutes in Heaven is exactly how it sounds, provided you were in heaven with the one you wanted to be with. I forget how you hooked up with the person you were to spend seven minutes with. Trust Me was the funniest one, because a guy would place his hand way down on your leg and work his way up and ask you if you trusted him and he proceeded. If you were shy or didn’t know the guy well, you’d stop him at your thigh, if you liked him he would work his way up to your breast and then you would have been officially “felt up.” (I hope I’m not being too graphic. I know this is PG.) In those days guys rarely made a pit stop you know where. Did anyone else play these games or was I just hanging out with the wrong crowd?

How can you forget your…

How can you forget your first kiss? It was in my closet with Victoria, the girl next door. We where about in the fifth grade. Her younger brother and sister where on the other side of the door asking “What are you doing in there?” We kissed each other on the cheek a couple of times and then one of us said how about the lips this time? Pretty racey for ten year olds around 1957. Now I must talk of THE kiss. The one that lead to my first true love. We where walking home from our first date at the movies. It was a cold Bronx winter evening. I still remember the date 2/2/62. With snow on the ground. We stopped in a small playground near her building and leaning against this large cement turtle (sounds funny when I think of it) we embraced. Let me tell you, my feet where not cold anymore. Same for my nose, hands or anything else! We went on to become great friends over the decades but have lost touch. Jill, if your out there I hope all is well.

My grandfather also threw away all letters I got from my boy and girlfriends in NYC when I went to stay with him in SC. I found out later and was also truly pissed because he always said I got nothing in the mail.

Young lady, I have gone…

Young lady, I have gone across country on a truck back in my teens when the serial killers were really rampant and I suggest that you be careful. Even with your young lover there are diseases. I’m sure your boyfriend has told you about the women that offer themselves to truckers. Some of them are old enough to be his mom. You don’t want to catch somethin’ you can’t throw back. It’s amazing to me that your parents would let you do this, my parents died when I was very young so no one really “cared” what I did in my teens. If they care about you and you care enough to listen to them if they say this doesn’t sound like the healthiest life for a girl your age, listen to them. Don’t get worn out and used up before your age, young girl. It’s been done too many time and time slips away faster than you know. PS: Not to mention, if you get pregnant and your boyfriend is still on the road with some non-pregnant young girl. Think, youngin’, please think.

There was a new girl in…

There was a new girl in town (Lower East Side) that I’d welcomed into my fold of homegirls. When I returned from a short trip to Europe, my recent boyfriend informed me that one of my friends showed up on his fire escape at 3 a.m, the very night I left for the airport. He didn’t know her name but the description was enough. Her name was Helena, we used to call her “hell raisin’Helena”. After being hurt and then totally pissed, I went to the “watering Hole” that we young adults played pool at nightly. I told all of my friends of Helena’s indescretion and I informed her that I was as good-looking if not more so than she. She had a little boyfriend and I approached him. I asked him, that knowing now what kind of person Helena was, climbing a guy’s fire escape in the dead of night like some desperate “alley cat”, wouldn’t he rather be with someone more chaste like me? I told her in front of everyone that I can take any man she had because unlike her, my hair my nails, my eyes and everything about me was real. And I wasn’t so needy of attention. I never had a problem out of her after that, she left the neighborhood. What a verbal cat fight we had. The guys were lovin’ every moment.
