MY DAD USED TO DO THE “CALLING OUT” FOR SUPPER EVERYNIGHT IN NICE WEATHER IN FAIRVIEW IN JERSEY IN THE 40S. WE LIVED IN AN APARTMENT ON THE CORNER OF A MAIN STREET AND A DEAD END STREET. ALL THE KIDS PLAYED ON THE DEAD END STREET.AT 5 O’CLOCK ON THE NOSE DAD WOULD BELLOW OUT THE WINDOW “RAY-MOND!!!” AND I WOULD HAVE TO BREAK OFF FROM WHAT EVER WE WERE PLAYING AND HIGH TAIL IT FOR HOME AND SUPPER. IT REALLY WASN’T EMBARRASING THOUGH BECAUSE ALL THE KIDS PARENTS DID THE SAME THING, YOU’D HERE “ELLEN!!!” OR “RONALD!!!” OR CHARLIE!!!” AND THAT WENT ON EVERY NIGHT. A GUY COULD SET HIS WATCH BY WHO EVER WAS GETTING CALLED FOR DINNER. THANKS, RAY RILEY

I never knew it was called a spauldeen until just now. We used to call it “the pink ball”, or “the ball”. In Fairview N.J.,in the 40s and 50s, we played against the firehouse door, which was raised on a track and when closed was sculptured with all kinds of angles to each section. Each kid had a section of the door and up to 6,7 kids could play at one time. The trick was to hit the ball at one of the moldings which would send it in a way it normally would not go. Or you could send it on down the line, or even put english on it and make it carren who knows where. Generations grew up playing hand ball against that fire house door in Fairview N.J. the door is still there, but i don’t see kids playing against it any more. Too much TV I guess. Thanks. Ray Riley

I can remember a game we played in the 50’s when you made a circular path in the snow with other paths through the circle. Someone was “it” and you had to stay on the paths and try to catch the others. I’m not sure I have the game exactly right as I was very young at the time. Does anyone know the name of the game and more details?

I went down one of those infamous ladders of an opened grate – growing up in Brooklyn, I was trying to get my Spaldeen. A huge “Ben” clone sewer rat was on his way up. Needless to say I gave the monster the right-of-way and haven’t touched a grating since.

My first kiss was an event that I’ll never forget. I was in the basement with one of my best friend, I knew him since I was 3. It wasn’t something I was expecting, in fact kissing him never even entered my mind. I was about 14 and we were watching some show, likely a cartoon. During commercials, he turned to me, we locked eyes, he leaned forward…and we kissed. Not what I was expecting my first kiss to be like. I only wish it was more special. But what can you do? I’ll never forget it.

I grew up in the village….we would go to carmine st. pool, which closed in the summer at 9 or 10pm but for some reason they would leave the bright lights on into the mourning hours…we would promply climb the fence along with about 2 or 3 hundred others, 5mins after closing. we would climb to the top of the handball court wall that happens to be just close enough to the deep end for a good dive..ouch.. anyway, in I think june or july of 1976 the 2nd nyc blackout occured at 11pm and the place was packed..all hell broke loose, people were screaming,yelling,.&$%#$#@ing, and scrambling.. oh did I mention it was pitch dark…. “What a blast” anyone know of that area?
