What about the ice man who used to deliver ice to the bars? I grew up on 191 Street in Manhattan and the ice truck would come about 8 a.m. and we would climb on the back of the truck and grab pieces of ice as they fell off the big blocks. On a hot summer day they tasted great!

Living on the 5th floor in an apartment building in NYC, I visited tar beach very often. My friends and I used to lay our blankets down, have our lemonade and try to withstand that hot sun. My friend got a blistering burn one summer.

Growing up in Washington Heights, NY, we used to sit on the stoop and play Concentration, where we would snap our fingers and chant “Concentration, names of” then you would fill in the blank, “one apiece(or 2, etc.),no repeats, such as ….” Anyone ever play that?

There is going to be a Tar Beach section at the Smithsonian Festival this summer. Washington should be hot enough to get the full effect, though it will be a trip to be sitting on that blacktop in the middle of the Washington Mall!

THE ROOFTOPS OF NYC PUT YOU SO CLOSE TO THE SUN EVEN THE OLD GARGOYLES PERCHED ALL AROUND COULDN’T PROTECT YOU. SPIKED KOOL-AID ON TAR BEACH COULD PROVE ALMOST SUICIDAL.

We lived in an apt in Astoria, Queens and as a little girl I use to prop upa blanket like a tent. Me and my siblings would hang out especially on hot summer nights. We had to be in at 8:00 and everyone was still out. So being on the fire escape made us feel we were not missing anything. Also there would be a group of boys from a gang called the Barons and they would harmonize to the tune of Duke of Earl. Oh the days of little wants.

I lived on Steinway St in Astoria and we went fishing too. Since it was a busy street we had meters and boy that was good for fishing. People were constantly dropping coins down the gratings. It was like hitting lotto when you got 25 cents. After all look what it could buy.

Whenever my family pissed me off I would buy a $15.00 round trip bus ticket to Atlantic City. The bus drivers knew me well. I was way too young to drink or gamble, so when the usual preachy speeches they gave were over they’d let me follow them around and eat at the buffet tables until it was time to return. To this day my folks can’t figure out where I went.

My first summer job on the books was at Mickey D’s by Prospect Park. I was 15 and so happy to get my little work permit, until I got hit with a little thing called taxes. The money I brought home was a joke compared to the “free” money I earned doing hair, or baby sitting. I was beginning to cultivate a bad attitude about working on the books until I got a new cute young manager. Gave me something to look forward to. My check sure wasn’t much to look at.
