My Dad, Vito Giannone, I’m…

My Dad, Vito Giannone, I’m sure was one of the greatest stickball players ever in his prime, and definitely if measured by his love of the game. He lived stickball, looked forward to it all week, and played all day Sunday. It keep him going, it was when he was his happiest. We flew to Puerto Rico for the stickball championship one year and I realized what a true family all of the players were. My Dad passed away a few years ago after an illness that took his sight and his hearing . . . but through it all he still loved to clench that stickball bat which we kept by his bedside. I would love to hear any memories you have of my Dad. I miss him a lot, and the stories he told over and over about the game he loved and the people he came to regard as family. My Dad was the nicest man I ever knew, he went straight to heaven and did not have to stop along the way, and he’s already started a stickball team up there . . . thank you, ginagiannone [at] aol [dot] com

I remember playing stickball…

I remember playing stickball (fast pitch wall ball against the school wall in the summer months from early morning until the sun set and we could no longer see the ball. Unlike most of the games played in NYC, those of us on Long Island that played usually used a tennis ball instead of a pinkee ball. The advantage of using a tennis ball was it couldn’t be hit as far. This was critical if you were playing on a small field. It was also great for pitching because the seams on a tennis ball are shaped exactly like a baseball and you can throw all of the same types of pitches (curve, screw, 2 & 4 seam fastball, etc). Actually, you can get a lot more movement on a tennis ball than you can with a baseball. One of the great things I remember about stickball was the ability to get a game going just about anywhere at any time. Our group of kids used to go from school yard to school yard and play against anyone who was willing to play. Those were some great times.

I lived in Astoria growing up in the lates 50’s We used Spaldings for stick ball but we also used the Spalding to play ” Strikebox”. This game featured a Concrete wall usually in a school yard with a box chalked onto it representing a strike zone.It was played with 4 player max ( 2 per side ) or just 2 players. The pitcher stood approx 50 feet from the wall and thru the Spalding and tried to get it past the hitter. As in normal baseball the batter had a chance to get 4 balls or 3 strikes. The outs per side were agreed to in advance as were the singles douobles etc. A broomstick handle was used for a bat. In 1958 a company actually came out with a nicely varnished broomstick just for us kids to play the game..

Wow, just found this site…

Wow, just found this site while browsing. I played stickball as my main passion in Bayonne NJ in the 60s, and I thought we invented the game there. I have the same memories as some of the other people, the Spalding could really take off form the bat, but it didnt curve as well as some of the cheaper balls. Loved the Spaldings until they cracked in half! I guess the best thing about the game was that you could just be your best; you would find someone who was good and then you would just play and play. My buddy at that time was a guy named Larry Adamson. I had heard of switch hitters, but I never heard of a switch pitcher- not until Larry. I was an imitator, and I was surprised at how easy it was- back then of course- to throw a reasonably good pitch with my left hand; We had some mighty battles. My best memory sounds made up, but it is true and I will tell it anyway. I might as well tell it here, my kids aren’t interested in hearing it! I was pitching, two out, bottom of the ninth, and I was ahead by a run or so; Larry was up with some men on base, and on a full count he cracked the pitch back to me, and the bat slipped out of his hands. This is a very vivid memory for me, even about 40 years later. The ball and the bat (a broomstick) were both coming at me. I stuck my hands out, put my head down, and closed my eyes. Amazingly enough, I caught the ball and ended the game. Not so amazingly for being so stupid, the bat hit me right in the head. Fortunately, it whacked me while it was spinning, and the point of the bat did not go through my skull. I had a good lump, and was dehydrated as usual after a long July or August game in the schoolyard on 47th street, and then we both went out and got some ices and that was that. I think that was the last game I ever played, although I did not know it at the time. This is the kind of satisfction that you just dont get at work! I have often thought about how my adult life is really an attempt to get back to the pleasures I had as a supposedly “underprivileged” youth.

My name is Gidgette Nieves. I am the daughter of Bob and Elena Ortiz – we live in San Diego, California. I always looked forward to the San Diego tournaments to see Steve Mercado and his family. We miss them. Here is something I wrote for the people who mourn. For They Will Be Comforted In the name of Jesus, we praise You and Worship You, our Lord God. My children, I am your Comforter and Guide in This life and everlasting. In this world, death is not knowing Me and not Following Me. In addtion, death is no longer An Existence of a being. However, life is knowing Me and following My Ways, and, therefore, life is everlasting. My spirit lives in all who receive Me, and your Spirit lives forever when your spirit leaves This world. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, The Lord has raised Him up. There is peace. For I have prepared a place For all, a place, a kingdom for all My children. And from this day, henceforth, blessed are Thos who mourn, For They Will Be Comforted!!! God Bless You

Ok here go’s… there is NOT one mention about all the balls that were split down the seam, right in half. Why is that? How many times can you remember blasting the crap out of either ball & splitting it in half? I also remember before I was old enuff to play with the older guys, I would always pick up the half balls that were laying around the park & squeezing them on my face (cheek), or tricep so that it would form a suction & stay there only to leave quite a red blotch mark, as you can imagine. All in all, there was no better feeling than ripping into a Spaldeen with the whip action of a stickball bat and blasting the ball into orbit over the roof of a building in the GLENWOOD PROJECTS, in Brooklyn NY. PERIOD!!! Ahhhhh, those were the days…………

I grew up in Port Richmond and played all the ball games stick ball, halfies, wire ball, boxball etc. I see a lot of people looking for pimple balls, the closest I have come is website littlebitofphilly.com They sell halfies , it is better than no pimple balls.
