In Washington Heights (181st Street)in the late 50’s/early 60’s, you could get both – Spaldeens were harder and cost 25 cents, while the Pennsie Pinky was only 15 cents and a lot softer and smoother. We preferred the Spaldeen for stickball and the Pinkie for punch ball. When they went “dead” and lost their bounce, the game was to “roof” the ball by throwing it onto the roof of a 6 story apartment building. Sid’s candy store on 181st street was the only place in the neighborhood that let you check all of the Spaldeens and Pinkies by giving them the “bounce test” before buying – holding a ball at about chest height and letting it go to see how high up it would bounce. I broke Mrs. Morrison’s living room window with a Spaldeen and hit the super of the building across the street with a Pennsie Pinkie!

“BRAGGING RIGHTS” Thursday,…

“BRAGGING RIGHTS” Thursday, September 14th @ 8pm WNET/Ch. 13 BRAGGING RIGHTS is an hour-long video documentary that chronicles the vibrant history of the urban game of stickball through its colorful players. Stickball has been played in the streets of New York City since the early 1920Õs and is known as Òthe poor manÕs baseball.Ó Stickball is the ultimate in improvising much with very little. Up until the 1960Õs, hydrants, cars and sometimes old men sunning in chairs were bases. During that time, many ethnic communities that would fight each other any other day of the week, would compete on the stickball field on Sundays. Over time, racial barriers were broken and many of the players became lifelong friends. Through the persistence and the passion of a tight-knit community brought together by tradition, the documentary chronicles what has become a national game of all family members. BRAGGING RIGHTS underscores the struggle to overcome and embrace difference and triumph over adversity. The broadcast will be in the tri-state area of NYC. The national broadcast will be soon after that, date tbd. Pre-order the DVD at www.braggingrightsmovie.com

I grew up in Woodside, Queens…

I grew up in Woodside, Queens in the seventies and loved Red Rover, Red Rover, Red Light, Green Light, etc. I remember the boys playing stick ball, etc. Being a girl, we did alot of the jumprope games/rhymes, and also more “girlie” steet games. I recall one being called “germany”, where you needed four concrete “squares” and would have to step for “one”, hop for “two”, Skip for “three”, etc. I think it went up to nine, and you couldn’t touch any “lines” and couldn’t step into “germany”, or the third box. Sound familiar to anyone? WE also played “girls, girls, out” This one used six boxes and had different categories in each box like, colors, girls names, boys names, etc. You would have to hop into the box twice saying “girls, girls out”, then go over each box saying a different girl’s name twice, then go into the next category and do boys names, etc. If anyone has more info on these games, please share. Love this website – it’s so nostalgic!

Hello Lou, I found this site quite by accident. I just wanted to pass on my condolences to you and your family. I understand your grieve and my heart goes out to you in your loss. I too have lost someone very dear to me recently, your friend Richie. But he chose to take his own life. I lost him 3 times, in divorce, recently in friendship and now forever to God. I try to make sense of all this but it seems so hard.

Anyone know a ball game…

Anyone know a ball game named “caliente”? It was a combination of “hot piece and butter” and “freeze tag” with a spaldeen! You could play with as many people that could fit into the play ground. You would power bounce the spaldeen as high as possible and everyone rush to catch the ball – but you had to keep your distance as well, because whe the ball was finally caught – everyone would have to freeze. The person with the ball would then try to hit one of the frozen players – you could move your body but one foot had to stay “frozen” to that spot where you stopped. If you were hit you were out, if not everyone would scramble for the ball and the rest would freez – this went on until the last person was out or a tie would be when there were ten throws and no one was hit.. In the Bronx, New York, in the 50’s we played a game called Russian 10 which sounds a lot like the games two of the other posters wrote about. First we would throw the ball up (or against the wall?) Then followed a series of claps. (Some behind the back?) I seem to remember the one hand against the wall position as well. No one I’ve ever mentioned this to had heard about it. I find it fascinating that a similar game with almost the same name was played in Chicago in the 40’s.

Stickball is a GREAT game! It is sure better to have the kids playing stickball, than sitting around the house playing video games. I am trying to help revive the game. I purchased a large quantity of the original SPALDEENS, or “Pinkys.” I also carry the “official stickball bats” made by Spalding. As you may know, these are VERY hard to find!! If anyone is interested, you may contact me at for more information. Keep on playing everyone!!

Great site. I learned about stickball at 15 yrs of age from a fellow by the name of Bobby Graham, a Brooklyn guy who worked at the same place where I was doing summer jobs in Roxbury MA. We used to play after work on Fridays while waiting for our paychecks to be issued. Loved the game from the first moment I laid my hands on that broomstick. We played fast-pitch in local schoolyards with a strike zone on the wall. Ground rules varied according to the game site, but a home run was always over the school building or across the street. The “official” ball was the pimple ball; we only used pinkies when unable to find pimple balls at the 5&10. In fact, pimple balls ultimately got so hard to find that we would go to extreme lengths to retrieve them in the course of game. It was always a sad thing when someone hit a pimple ball right on the seam and split it. Haven’t seen a pimple ball in a LONG time, though. I remember spending many hours practicing and perfecting my pitching technique. Those were the days when a kid had plenty of time on his hands after school and before dinner. It got to the point where I could reliably hit the door handle of my house garage door from across the street. Developed about a half dozen different pitches, including a wicked Elroy Face inspired sinker. Had some wicked grudge match games against local neighborhood rivals. One of my great sports moments was pitching nine straight no-hitters against them. They refused to play us any more. I guess we still own the bragging rights in that rivalry. Nice to be able to share my memories with people who remember and understand this great street sport. Better than golf IMO.
