Yes, Pensie Pinkies were hollow, pink rubber balls, just like Spaldeens. But Pensie Pinkies were a lot softer, maybe because they had less air in them, or maybe the rubber was thinner. In any case, because they were softer, Pensie Pinkies were easy to “fluke” (put a spin on the ball by squeezing it between thumb and knuckles as you tossed it. (Very good for Box Baseball.) I don’t recall any sponge rubber ball. You’da got kicked out of the neighborhood for that. Steve S.

PS 186 bellerose, glen oaks, queens 1950’s 1960’s.We played it behind a small brick school park building.Only enough room for two players.Thats the only way i played, one on one,a very fast game, one side of your sneakers allways wore out.And scrapping you fingers on the cement didnt help. The big kids had the little black hand ball, rock hard, with a glove, that was what every kid wanted, that ‘BOSS’ hand ball and special handball glove. And a ten speed bike too!

Still some confusion here on spaldeens and pensi pinkies. We can all agree spaldeens are hallow and can split, but are pensie pinkies hallow too? I remember it as a pink sponge ball.Or was there a third type of ball, solid sponge,as i remember.

I grew up in Bayside, Queens in the 1950s. We used Spaldeens for stickball and stoopball. The new ones cost a quarter and bounced higher than Pensie Pinkies (which, I believe, cost 15 cents.) Girls used Pensie Pinkies for punchball because they were so much softer. For that reason, they were also preferred for box baseball. For stickball, we played “fungo,” that is, no pitcher. Toss the ball in the air and hit it. Anyone remember the term “fungo?”

I remember growing up in Brooklyn playing stickball, handball and off the point during the sixties and seventies. I was the king of fishing up spaldeens from the sewers on our block with strung together wire hangers. it was a real art to get the ball to hold in the hanger as you carefully pulled it up from the darkness. then we would boil them to rejuvenate them so they could bounce again.

I am also from Da Bronx and I remember all those names for the game as I travelled into different neighborhoods to compete. On my street: Belmont and 175, we called it “Down the River”. I have no idea why. This was in the 1950s

Regarding the queries about Russian and 7 Up. When I grew up in Brooklyn in the early 1960s, we called the game Russian 10. You had to do task 1 one time, task 2 two times etc. until the 10th task which you had to do 10 times. Unfortunately I don’t remember all the tasks. Following are the tasks I can remember, but the order may be incorrect. 1. Throw Spalding against wall and catch on fly. 2. Throw ball at wall, let it bounce once and catch 3. Throw ball at wall, clap and catch on fly. 4. Throw ball under your leg and catch on fly. 5. If right handed: put left palm against the wall and hold arm straight. Hold ball in right hand and toss it from under your left arm over your outstretched left arm and catch it. 6. Throw ball at wall, spin around and catch on fly. 7. Throw ball at wall, clap hands in front of body, behind body and in front again and catch ball on fly. (You have to clap very quickly!) I believe a player’s turn lasted until she missed catching the ball. On her next turn she had to start from the step she missed on. This is as much as I can remember. If someone out their in cyberspace remembers all 10 tasks, please e-mail!

I grew up on Gun Hill Rd halfway between Jerome Ave and Webster Ave. Lived in Norwood(we didnt call it that back then) from 1960 to 1971.A perfect neighborhood to be born into.Leaving as an eleven year old for Southern California was heartbreaking. We played Stickball in the schoolyards of PS94. Fastpitch-box on the wall style. The spaldeen was the ball of choice over the soft and wussy pensie pinky. Does anyone remember splitting a spaldeen when hitting an “eggie” and putting the halves on your elbows? Arrived in Los Angeles suburb of Encino in summer of 1971 and promptly found out that kids had no idea what stickball or spaldeens were. What an underpriviledged culture. All we had were swimming pools, golf courses, and movie stars for neighbors. lol. I wanted the Bronx back. If I could turn the clock back I would still want the bronx back.Money doesn’t buy happiness:for me it was the bronx culture that made me rich. Bill from Gun Hill
