Halfball I dream…

Halfball I dream of the summer of ’61 when Roger Maris was engaged in his assault on the Babe’s record and for some uncanny reason I became the King of The Home Run in an Atlantic City half ball league. We played this most enjoyable of all the street games with a cut in two star ball, pimple ball or the rare pink ball. Fast pitch or underhand lob, it didn’t make a difference. The excitement was always there. I couldn’t hit squat on a regular diamond but half ball was my ticket to fame. Geez! I’m now living in Southern Cal and as soon as I’m done writing this note, I’m going out to the garage, cut off a broom handle and slice a few tennis balls. I’m going to show my seventeen year old surfer the real sport of summer.

It’s amazing to find that stoopball as played on Long Island, NY in the early 60’s was the same game being played in Chicago etc. The only difference was we had fielders, so you could try and catch the ball on a fly and get the “batter” out. Since we were little kids, it didn’t happen too often!

Sedgwick Projects on University and 174th from 1960-1968 — I was box baseball champ and set a season record for punchball homers — the signs said “keep off the grass” but I guess it’s safe to say now that we used to play football on it all the time (statute of limitations)– all those skills were pretty non-transferable when we moved to Los Angeles in 1968, but even at 44 years old I’ll bet nobody could hit my “stop-and-go”!!

We called it “stairball”. Much like “pinners” described by Brian. Catch it on the fly for an out. If it bounced before you caught it, you had to throw at the stairs and catch the rebound on the fly or it was a single. If it landed in the street, it was a double if it was on the near side, triple if on the far side, and a homer if it landed clear across the street. We had both one-on-one and two-on-two rules. We were fantasy baseball pioneers – we had rosters of pro players, and we traded them, kept stats, had playoffs, and at least two world series per summer.

Yes, that’s the way I remember it too. Single, double, triple, HR. We actually mentally scored the whole thing also, say, a single, a single then a double, RUN SCORES! One-nothing, etc.

How about salugee? (I have no idea how to spell it) I think it is the same as keep away. We played it in the schoolyards in Howard Beach in the 1960s. It was fun but violent. You could do anything to the guy with the ball – so you had to throw it before you got clobbered. Lots of fights broke out.

In Montreal in the early seventies we used to play what we called “tennis baseball”, right in the middle of the street. A tennis racquet was used as the bat and a tennis ball or some kind of plastic ball replaced the baseball. Ton’s of fun!

In the Bronx in the early 40s: Two players in adjacent boxes (squares of sidewalk paving) hit the ball back and forth. The ball must bounce in the other player’s box. The player missing the ball or not bouncing it in his opponent’s box gets a point. 21 points loses.
