1 day a year a few friends meet the game they play is in the street a ball is hit against a curb so you can;t play it in the burbs everyone aims for the perfect point if you dont hit it – there is always a joint games are hot out on the black top but no one ever wants to stop sometimes balls fly on the roof when that happens you feel like a goof the game is played extremly hard its more intense than Camden Yard players fight and playesrs swear but you wont find bad blood anywhere so as you can see curb ball is wild just keep on playing it like a child.

back to the baltimore version – 3 on a side is the way the game should be played. A tennis ball is hit against the curb and most rules follow regular baseball rules.more to follow. Email me with Questions dsteibe [at] troweprice [dot] com.

The Highlandtown (Balt) version is called curb ball. It is played in the intersection with the 4 corners as bases. We still play this game once a year. If anyone wants more details let me know.

In my day the 50’s we played hit the penny. You would use two sidewalk squares with the penny starting on the middle line of the two boxes. if the thrower hit the penny he got a point. if the penny turned over you got two points. First player to reach 11 or 21 won the game

I have written and illustrated a book on “City Games” played with a “pimple ball”. These games include: stickball, wallball, wireball, boxball, miniature, ledgies, points, dinky and the ultimate and most sublime of the street games, halfball. Halfball is one of the greatest games ever, and if anyone has any info or comments regarding these games feel free to e-mail me at bearncrepe [at] aol [dot] com. Thanks, Bob Bu

Whenever we didn’t have a ball, we would take a wire coat hanger, shape the bottom into a small circle, and fish balls out of the sewer. Somehow, no one got sick. The balls were usually pretty dead, but you couldn’t beat the price. Also, if a new ball went down the sewer, we would fish it right out.

I’ve heard about this game. How far would the ball actually go? And did you really take a perfectly good rubber ball and split it to play this?

I grew up in the 50’s in Brighton, a part of Boston. We played 2 versions of halfball, usually with 2 players per side. There was a wall version where anything off the wall was a hit, depending on height. However, if a fielder caught a line drive or a rebound off the wall, all baserunners were erased. In the street version we hit for distance. Strikes and fouls were outs. Believe it or not, there was a front page story in the Wall St. Journal in 1985 about the summer joys of halfball.(I still have it). It claimed that the game was only played in two cities: Boston and Philadelphia, and the best teams from those areas were about to play the 1985 “World Championship” tournament in a schoolyard in Charlestown, Mass.
