well this is *odd* – I grew up in western NY – Buffalo and Clarence – the two counties bordering Amherst and played seven up all the time, the *russian version* throwing the ball against the wall for seven times, the next six it had to bounce, after that I am fuzzy – well you know what I mean, but remember spinning around to catch it and the under the leg. Maybe it is regional! Now that I am “way old” I am looking for hand clapping games for my *offsprung* and wouldn’t it be delightful to find regional ones!

The United States Handball Association http://www.ushandball.org is currently working on a ball to replace the void left created when the manufacturing of the Pensy Pinkie and the Spaldeen were halted. I’ve seen an early prototype and it has potential.

Bigdaddy, where did you play this game exactly? We played that game for hours on end. Funny how all the games mentioned here ran in cycles, a week of this one and then a week of another , folloewed by a week of yet another one. This site makes me happy and sad at the same time. Happy because I remember al these games, and sad because our children will never experience the childhood that we had. Anthony

I grew up in the Brownsville-East New York areas in the 30s and 40s. Went to JHS 174 and later to Jefferson HS. As kids we played a number of games for small change including “pitching pennies” and a variation of boxball in which the object was to knock a penny or nickel into an opponents box by hitting it with a spaulding. Does anyone know of other children’s gambling games from those days or the 50s or even 60s if they still existed then?

Reading all the experiences is great fun. Spaldeens was the the ball of choice for those of us in Bensonhurst in the early 60’s. The grip was awesome, especially when you wanted to blast the fast ball by ’em. Made you feel like Bob Turley

Hey, seems like I am in good company with you guys…I am a displaced ex-tomboy from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn living in “Jersey”– my 11 year old son is hopelessly bored–so are his friends–Today I made a Skully Board in the street, melted crayons, and dazzled them with my skill—A guy in a truck came by and saw us–he screamed, “Skullies–you from Brooklyn?” Tomorrow, I look for a Spaldeen. The Stoop is going to be the hard part.

Spaldeens are inherently good, and will do good things for you even at the advanced age of 13 ;). Please stay in touch with us and tell us how the spaldeen has changed your life.
