Growing up in South Philly, the pimple ball was indispensible. You couldn’t play the street games without it: Stickball (aka Fastball), Halfball, Hit the Penny, Chink, Wallball, Wireball, Babies in the Air. I find it difficult to explain to my kids just what a pimple ball was. I wish I had saved one to show them. The thing I found most interesting about it was when you pressed your index finger hard on the top of the ball and throw it hard releasing it so that it’s trajectory was toward the ground, it would almost float as it sped toward it’s target. I’ve seen guys throw them almost the length of a city block where the ball made the entire trip 6 inches off the ground.

We used to play a game in the i950’s in charleston s.c. and we called it half rubber or half ball. we didn’t know anything about pensie pinkey’s or spaldeen’s we would take any kind of solid rubber ball and cut it in half. Man, what a fun game, it was played on the order of baseball but no running to the bases. Has any one out ther ever played this game? If interested I can give you all the rules. blueridgeart [at] blueridg [dot] net

If anyone knows where a pimple ball can be purchased, let me know. I’ve been in the mood for half ball for about 20 years which is about the last time I saw a star ball

We played all the Philly street games in Strawberry Mansion(North Philly). Drain pipe climbing was a necessary skill that was developed as a result of “roofing” half balls hit up there or the whole pimples gone there in ledgeball or “ledgies”. The roof contained a renewable resource for halfball as I recall. I now live in Arizona where summer temperatures in the full sun can go over 150 degrees at 6 feet above the ground. Lucky that we’re are next to the Colorado River at the Mexican and Calif. borders- but no street games here in the summer. The winters are ok about 70, no rain and sunny with our visitors playing golf. Too bad for them not to play halfball instead. regards to all- Fred in Yuma

As a youth growing up in South Philly, 6th & Shunk, we played many street games, but the ultimate street game was Halfball. We never played lobs or floaters. We played fast pitch with an umpire calling balls and strikes. We used the four corners of an intersection as our diamond. We threw sidearm, three quarter sidearm and submarine. We could make that ball rise, curve or drop. I could start a riser low and inside and it would finish as a strike. I could go on and on talking about the old halfball days. It is a great game!!!

I have been desperately searching for a pimple ball to fulfill my good friends birthday wishes. He is a former player who would like to introduce his grandson to the greatest game ever invented – half ball. If you know where I could purchase one, please respond as soon as possible. Time is running out.

This is neat I never heard of some of these games and the Halfball sounds real interesting(and yes Micknpez is right, I did cringe at the thought of cutting a perfectly good Spaldeen in half)
