looking for any old stickball…

looking for any old stickball players from 1955 from 134st in Queens N.Y.I am old school LES stickball, stoop, kick the can, scullys, johny on the pony, hoy peas and butter, round up etc.I am also a ebay junkie.I was searching one day and I came across a old stickball bat from 1955.It was written on the bat.34st stickball champs.Queens N.Y.I had to buy this bat.Which I overpaid for.But the seller was from Oregon and I felt this bat should be on the east coast so I bought it.I would like to find any one of this 1955 neighborhood champ team.It would be nice if I could see the face of someone probably in there early to mid sixties see a happy part of there youth. For as any guy out there over 40 knows that some of the best time they had in their life was when there were playing those old games.God Bless

LOVE this site! Found it while looking for info on a game called “Kings”, which I find is also called Ace-King-Queen. Funny how the names mutate…. In Bayonne, NJ in the 60’s, the Pennsy Pinky was considered too soft for almost all uses; we were Spaldeen loyalists to a boy. Also: anyone who knows what a “money bug” was, e-mail me (corydalus1956 [at] yahoo [dot] com)

In Greenpoint Brooklyn in the 70s this was called, I am sorry to say, “Chinky”, but was a great game nonetheless. Played as described on the site, with spin applied to the ball esstential.

in response to the hin-do quesstion:we always said it stood for hindering or blocking out the other player. we always called a redo. also i’m going to give my vote to the pense pinkie. either ball was okay but the pinkies lasted longer as long as they stayed off the roof. does anyone remember chinese handball? you bounced the ball on the sidewalk before it hit the wall. and if you were the cause of play stopping you were sent down the end of the line.

First off, I would like to say that it is so encouraging to see how many people really do care about stickball. Its honestly a passion and a thrilling sport. I’m posting the following as a footnote to anybody that might be interested and just to let the stickball world in general know that the sport is alive and well in my area. Myself and around 5-7 other guys, all around 21 years old play stickball almost everyday in Bayside, Queens. We even keep statistics and have made it into a small league. I first learned of stickball from my father, who grew up in the same area, and it is remarkable to see how much of a comeback stickball has made in recent times. I realize that in the grand scheme of life i am very young, but each year it seems more and more people are purchasing bats and taking up the sport. This is evident by the difficulty you have even finding a place to play around here often times. If any other guys play in the area feel free to drop me an email, just letting everybody know that the sport is very much alive.

Growing up on the same Bronx…

Growing up on the same Bronx block for 21 years, we called the game “slugs” although i do recall the other names (ace, king, queen and chinese handball). It was one of the most popular games on the block. As a kid, I’d watch the older guys play with awe and once I started playing, i loved it. Expecially after learning to “cut” the ball, which would fool the hell out of an opponent, unless he had a nastier cut than you. Then there were all the other “rules” we’d throw in like “waterfalls”, “baby waterfalls”, “hindus”, etc. I’m just mad that I can’t remember what all of these mean or how they were used in the game! I remember how the whole neighborhood would get into the game and we’d play for hours, with sometimes 8-10 players at a time. Then it was on to skelsies, johnny on the pony, or ringolevio. Ah, the good ole days.

We used only Spaldeens in Glendale, Queens in the 70s for stickball & acekingoueen handball. Good thing they were hollow rubber balls so they floated in the storm sewers & we always be able to fish them out with a coat hanger bent into a ball holder shape.

Yeah, we called it Chinese Handball and usually played for asses up. With our hard throwers, losing was equal to having a red ass for hours. One kept throwing until he missed. We played at the courtyard at 3200 Broadway in Manhattan. What made the game even more of a challenge was that we had a back wall to contend with. From front to back it was about 10-12 feet. A really good player could “cut” the ball and make it take a crazy first bounce only 6 inches from either the front or back wall. There were lots of scraped knuckles. “Knucles”, that’s another game.

As 58 year old former player of Ace-King, I’m wondering if any out there can help jog my memory. There were rules calls at the beginning of every game – “No babying, no stealing, no carrying, etc.” There were also calls made during the game – some obvious, like “do-over” some not, like “fluke, or Hindu.” Anyone remmebr these and their meaning? I know some had to do with whether the ball struck an edge of the brick causing a “funny” bounce. Mike G

I’m also from Washington Heights, on Bennett Ave. We played this game, but we called it “Slug”. I wonder if anyone else knew it by this name. I don’t remember our rules so well so I’m checking w/ my older sister… hopefully she will.
