I agree. I grew up on the Carlton Ave side of Ft. Greene. There was truly a sense of family Skelzies,punchball,co-co-levio,rollerskating were some of the regular games. On our side we had the Willoughby Center, were we shot pool, played ping-ping, and spades till 11:00 at night

Wow. this brings back memories. I grew up on Bowers Street and Milton avenue in Jersey City NJ and we had a board cut into the street with our pocket knives. I use to love kicksies and we called the game simply bottle caps and played for hours on end, games like wiffle ball, fly’s up and of course nerf footballs kept us out of trouble and parents never wondered where you were because the world was a much safer place. I just had a bottle cap lying around and decide to show my kids what we did with them and now they want to play. I would love to see a big tournament somewhere. I would go get some glass bottles and make my “Glassies” We did that by finding a sewer plate and rolling the top of the bottle around over the ridges until it fell off, rub it into the strret to make it smooth and you had one heck of a cap to play with. Thanks for the memories Thanks

Any self respecting kid that grew up in the 50-60s in St.Albans, Queens and went to PS 118 knows that Pensie-Pinkies rule. Its called pensie-pinkie because it had a keystone stamped on the pink ball. The state symbol for Pensylvania is the keystone. The nick name for Pensylvania is the “Keystone state”-hence Pensie short for Pensylvania. I found this site looking for Skelly/Scully rules. Great site. I played all the usual street games including stoop ball, chinese handball, stickball etc. A kid couldn’t live without a Pensie. ANYONE HEAR OF RUNNING BASES??? Two “basemen” on either side of the street and a bunch of kids in the middle. The object was to tag the kids out as they ran back and forth between the two bases. It was like a run down in baseball. One of the few co-ed games at the time. Girls were so icky back then. This site brought back many wonderful memories.

We had several painted Skelly squares in our Cypress Hills projects back in East New York Brooklyn. Skelly, Boxball, HopSkotch, seemed every ten feet. I remember generations of us playing it back in the sixties, and waiting our turn to. It was always the older teens first, then they’d leave to go the the basketball courts, or the top circle. Then we’d get the chance. My favorite cap of use was the coke top or wine cap with wax, but like many, I longed for the cool glass ring of the Coke, Tab, Fresca, or beer bottle ring. Seems I remember the older teens (back in the sixties) used to fish them out of the trash cans, and proceed to skim the necks on the asphalt or stoop until you got the perfect ring.

Spaldeens. I was just telling my wife about Skelly, and how back in East New York Brooklyn Sutter Avenue projects we used to cram the everyday essentials into a pair of Lee or Wrangler jeans: Bazooka gum Baseball cards Wooden metal tipped top with string Skelly top (I preferred the wax filled cap, mostly due to the fact I could never skim the beer bottle neck just right to get the sweet glass cap.) Spaldeen Somewhere, back in NYC there has to be all the Spaldeens that were roofed, hit between building cracks, sewer bound, between the spokes of our old bikes, and those broken ones used by Mom and Dad to cover sharp objects and second as couch leg lifters. When I see a piece of Bazooka gum today, I think of how we used to break it in four, share the comic, chew up the gum, and place it on the end of a broken mop or broom handle and fish out the coins and subway tokens to buy penny candy. Fish enough coins, you got a new Spaldeen. Pensie-Pinkies were foamier, as I recall. When they got chipped, well, there went the homeruns of the punchball team.

I had a dream the other night that reminded me of my childhood days in Greenpoint Brooklyn where we would play this game day after day. What a great time I had. I feel somewhat privileged to have been part of something that defined who I am as a person raised in the streets of New York. Anyway, I decided to Google the game and came across this site. I live in California now, but feel a sense of importance in showing my kids this game. I’m not sure they’ll like it because times have changed and everthing seems to have to require a joystick these days, but I will teach them anyway. Thanks again for such a wonderful site and reminding me of my days of old.

yo today we was talking about old schol games and I was born in East New York Brooklyn and i now live in Atlanta Ga, and i was trying to put these cats up on skelly. It broke my heart that i could not get anybody to feel me. Before i got into girls i played from day to night, make the court out of chalk, rocks, whatever we could find , and the tops was the push-ups from the ice cream truck, or red milk tops. I loved it and still do iam gonna pass it on to my son and bring skelly to the ATl.” hit a killer be a killer” p.s. just like carol kleinman above me i ran blvd in the 80’s right in p.s.273 i lived on barbey st

I grew up in the East New York section of Brooklyn in the 1950’s. Remembered Playing skelly outside on the sidewalk in front of the blvd projects. We made skelly caps from soda caps with the cork still in it. While the crayon wax was still wet we would put a charm that would come out of a gumball machine in it. Loved the game .
