Hi Marc, I really don’t know how one could play skully on a manhole cover–in fact, I remember playing adjacent to one and avoiding it at all costs in fear of losing our treasured caps down the holes you’d find in it! However, I don’t mean to say your brain is turning to mush… I can imagine a game being played on a manhole if it were sufficiently smooth (I’ve seen smooth ones). If you could tell us more about it–like what era you played it–we’d all love to hear about it. It’s great to hear that about any skully variant, especially outside of the NYC/Philly areas. -Hugh McNally hmcnally [at] streetplay [dot] com

I played Skully in Hyattsville, PG County MD. Outside of Washington DC. I lived in the apartments behind the PG Plaza Shopping Center and a kid from NY taught me the game. I remember playing it on a manhole cover. Please tell me my brain isn’t mush and the game could be played no a sewer cap. Better yet… if you’re that kid. Hi!! Trust me, I’ll be searching the site on the variances of Hopskotch (Shoe Heel and Layout) that we played in Baltimore. And Marbles with hole dug in the dirt. At 46 it’s amazing the things that stay with you.

I can’t tell you what a joy this has been for me. NOONE ever knows what I am talking about when I mention skully – to see Yogi playing was great! I grew up in the Bronx during the 60s. We each have several skully caps – each for different purposes. We named them (I had one I called tony the tiger because it was brown and orange and sort of stripped). We had as much fun making our skully caps as we had playing. I remember the bully in our neighborhood used to love to drop our caps down into the holes of sewer caps. Thanks for the memories!

Skelly was my favorite.. in East New York… it was as large as the square sidewalk square (if that makes sense)..anyway, when I had my kids I taught them ALL our games and I know that they’ll teach theirs…. it is up to us, and Streetplay, too, to keep it alive….. Sheindie Kusnetz

As a former brooklynite I remember many days playing skelly in the Marlboro housing projects in Gravesend. It’s kinda sad that kids today don’t play the games we used to play and and I’m 30 years old . I mean games like tag , off the wall, stoop ball, asses up, manhunt etc. They mostly are locked in front of the TV . I would like to know the size of the skelly board. I can’t remember and besides every building had a skelly board spray painted nearby , thanks to the ” big kids “. I don’t recall ” out of town “in skelly. What is it ?

Thanks for the rules and pictures. I am 36, female, originally from the Bronx. Just recently I have been thinking alot about the games I used to play in the streets. I lived on Decatur and 211th. We played stoopball, stickball, skullies climbed the cemetary walls, made motion potions.. whatever we could do. Kids now a days, I dunno, too many toys, no imagination. We live in the country now, I just purchased a nok hockey game, like I used to play at The Oval Park. A simple game and my 5 year old daughter loves playing. I would like to teach someone to play skullies with me, I miss that stuff. It was nice finding this website.

There is no social function in life that was more profound or important than hangin out on da stoop! My stoop on 113th St. in Richmond Hill Queens was the epicenter of the universe from the 60’s to the 80’s, it was a family tradition. My mom’s theroy was she always knew where we were. She was also the self appointed guardian and disciplinarian to every kid on the block. Also my grandmother kept them all fed! Now I live in Florida as does my entire family that moved from Queens. So now we teach our kids about hangin out. Only here we don’t have stoops, so we break out our beach chairs and hang out in the driveway. We call it “Trash Nite”, the Floridians in the neighbor still can’t figure us out, but there kids love learning to play kick the can, I Declare War,skelly, and much more. I’m proud to say at 45 I can still whip some butt in skelly!! I’m also teaching the unenlightened down here about stickball, fast pitch against the wall of coarse.

A-h-h !! Growin up in Richmond Hill,Queens..where does one begin!!! Skelly in the streets, stoop baseball (my house was “the stoop”), slapball, wiffleball, and everyones favorite S&M game Hot Beans & Butter!! Roller hockey in the steets, the rivalries..113th St. -vs- The World!!! Naturally any playground as part of a school was called “the schoolyard” and you never used P.S. you just said you were going to 62 to play stickball. There was the progressive growth of where you hung out and played ball. For us it was 62, Hill (H.S.),108,Smokey Park, 88th St. Park (on Atlantic Ave.), and of coarse as was stated before …”Mecca”- Victory Field !!! The playing fields where we left patches of our dungarees and flesh from sliding on the asphalt! Inner city fast pitch Softball on asphalt, there was nothing like it in the world!! Fast and furious!! “..those memories come back to haunt me…” So much fun so little time!!!!

I played Skelly on one of the many boards they painted in a city housing project in the Bronx over 40 years ago. To this day, I can’t take the cap off a product without evaluating how good a Skelly cap it might make.
