I gotta tell ya, the hair on the back of my neck stood up after reading some of the stories.I grew up in Jamaica, Queens( born in 51 ). The way the world is today, we need more sites like this. Skelly was the best! We would fill the cap ( beer caps ) with melted crayon then rub real hard on the sidewalk ( aerodynamic ):) After going around back and forth and making around center,( if you landed on a line you started over )the thrill of blasting was the best! This is great!!!!! Keep it up. I’m gonna look for pictures right now. Thanks

I, too, lived in Brooklyn, and never heard of this game. Perhaps, no one could afford to part with their heels.

Other games with baseball…

Other games with baseball cards: 1) Trying to flip a card the farthest and winning the round. How to cheat: glue two cards together. 2) Set a card leaning against a wall and try to knock it down from across the area (often done in the lobby of an apartment building). Winner keeps everyone’s attempts. 3) Flipping across the lobby–closest to the opposite wall wins all the cards that were flipped that round. 4) A game I could never appreciate: Two players–one flips a card to the ground at his feet, noting whether it was heads (the picture of the ball player) or tails (the statistics). The opponent would have to match the toss–heads or tails–to win your card, or fail to match it and lose his.

1. Red Light, Green Light, One Two Three One person (in charge) Turns their back on the rest and counts 1,2,3 red or green light and turned around quickly. if it was red light the rest had to freeze. If green keep running until “red light” illegal movement =disqualification 2. Giant Steps A leader could dictate how many giant or small steps contestants could take. The winner was decided arbitrarily by the leader….although we’d never admit that then

Seven up – it sounds so familiar – yet so hazy – but yes we played it

Freeze Games … One person was chosen to be “it.” The other participants start skipping, jumping, walking or running around until “it” yells “freeze.” Everyone then had to hold their positions like a statue. The first person to lose their balance became “it” for the next round. ; )

Anybody remember Seven-Up?…

Anybody remember Seven-Up? We played it (upstate New York in the 60’s) with a ball (probably similar to the pink Spaulding ball) against a wall. This is what I remember: It started off easy. You threw the ball against a wall 7 times, and caught it each time before it hit the ground, and called out 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 up! Then you threw it against the wall 6 times, and caught it after it bounced 1,2,3,4,5,6 up! Then you just bounced it on the ground 5 times 1,2,3,4,5 up! Then it gets a little fuzzy in my memory. Bounced it 4 times on the ground and under your leg??? Some variation all the way down to 1 up. If you could get through that entire set without messing up, you started all over again, each time making it slightly harder by adding a variation (like clapping once each time you threw the ball). Can’t remember all the variations. This was one of our favorite “girl games”, along with Red Light, Green Light, Mother May I, Freeze Tag, and Red Rover. But the best game to get boys and girls of all ages together in our neighborhood was kickball.

Does anyone remember fried marbles? I think that we did that in the late sixties or early seventies. We’d place the mables in a fry pan and heat them for several minutes; then plunge them into ice cold water to cause them form internal cracks. They would look like tiny kalaidoscopes. We could then drill holes through them so that we could string them up for jewelry. We sure did ruin a lot of great puries that way.

> rounded metal feet from the bottom of > Catholic school desks This is the culmination of skully cap technology. Though I acquired some personally through the Catholic school route, my public school friends seemed have a wider variety of caps acquired in this way. I still have my cap (> 20 years old); I hope to get pictures of this and other artifacts here on the site in the future.
