I grew up in Flatbush during the late 50s early 60s, and I played alot of skelley. What was really nice was that I hung out on a dead end street (E 22) and there wasn’t much traffic to interrupt the game. I do recall a that there were usually a few games going at any given time, There was usualy a fresh board drawn to play on, although most of us took great pride in our ability to lay out “The best” Skelley court. The sale of chalk in my neighborhood was probably up there with milk or newspapers. In my neghborhood, we only used soda or beer caps. It was a blessing when twist-offs came out ’cause then you didn’t have to try and straighten out a bent cap to use it. Before them, opening a soda bottle, to get the cap became an artform. We’d melt crayons into the caps, sometimes trying to mix and swirl the colors before it cooled.

Thanks so very much for recording the rules, Hugh. I haven’t played Skully since Jr High, I would guess, which was about 45 years ago. The best Skully piece I ever had was a wooden checker (do they make them any more? All I ever see now are plastic ones) that had a hole in the middle (burned with a soldering iron) which was then filled with molten lead. Bronx Gal

The kids today have so many sophisticated toys, and are bored stiff. We were fully occupied with so many games utilizing nothing more than a rubber ball, or bottle cap. I would love it if someone could refresh my memory on how to play the game of skelly and how to draw the court. I would love to teach my kids.

I remember as a youngster in grade shcool, we would go to someones party and they would play Spin the Bottle. Everyone sat in a circle, then one person would spin the bottle and whoever it turned to would get a hug or a kiss on the cheek. Some times it was a little embarresing, as there were both boys and girls there, and I was very shy wnd turned red as a beet when the bottle turned to me. I sat holding my breath, hoping it would point to someone else. Ah, what memories!

mconroy you brought back memories. Had many a chestnut fight and killers that were about a third of a chestnut dangling. Had a tree in St Francis church grounds (Maple & Nostrand) where we would scale the fence and get our chestnuts. It was great

> if you landed on a line you started over Was this your rule for going from 1-backward back to the skull (i.e., “going for killer”)? I might remember that variation.

Grew up on Wilson Street and Lee Avenue in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Attended Boys High School. Most friends went to Eastern District or Seward Park High School. Most of us played punch ball with a “baby line.” three steps to Germany, Johnny on the Pony, Chinese handball and box ball. We read and traded comic books. “Action Comics, Detective Comics, Marvel, King Feature Comics and read the comics in the newspapers. Dick Tracy, (my favorite), Smiling Jack with Fat Stuff losing a button to a ubiquitous chicken who followed him everywhere. Saturday matines for 5 cents we saw a chapter (Tim Tyler’s Luck or Flash Gordon) the Paramount News (Monkees do the craaaaziest things,)two or three features, a cartoon and sometimes a door prize announced from the stage. I could go on forever and include the radio programs for which we raced home from the school playground to hear.
