I grew up in Woodside Queens…

I grew up in Woodside Queens in the 60’s and we played a game where a guy would hit a ball with the bat and if you caight it on the fly, you were up. If you didn’t catch it, whoever got the ball would roll it toward the batter (who had to lay his bat on the ground). If you either missed the bat or hit it and the batter caught the ball before it bounced, he hit again. If the batter missed the ball after it hit, you became the hitter. I tried to bring the game to Long Island when we moved to the burbs but it couldn’t compete with baseball fields.

Yes! “I declare war on…..(country)!”…

Yes! “I declare war on…..(country)!” Long pause before you yelled out the name to heighten the anticipation. We used the exact same rules as Mike. If you forgot who was what country, you sometimes declared war on yourself! (I remember doing this) After everyone froze, the person who caught the ball was allowed three steps towards anyone he chose to target, then threw the ball at him. If hit, the target was “it” and declared war for the next round. For the three steps, we were allowed to place the ball on the ground where we caught it, then back up and take a running jump for our three steps. I grew up playing this in Laurelton, Queens in the late 50’s and 60’s.

I grew up in Sheepshead Bay in the 50′ & 60’s .We played ringoleevio. One guy was it, each guy he caught was now on his side and would help him catch the others until everyone was caught. In the 5th Grade in St Marks and one day the guys in my class decided to meet at Bedford Park after school for a “big game” I was the last one caught, the Buchite twins had me cornered by the baby swings one or all of us started swinging the swings I don’t know why, as they came around from opposite sides, I turned and started to run between the swings and B A M right in the face. I could tell by the look on everyones face it wasn’t pretty……no blood but a big chipped front tooth.

I would like some help in teaching my son some marble games and rules. I picked up a bag of marbles at a farmstand and thought it would be fun to teach him, but having never played myself I need some help. He thinks they are great to look at, but I was trying to tell him that he and his friends could have a lot of fun playing. Any general game rules would be appreciated. You can email me at lvidean [at] hotmail [dot] com.

I was thinking the same as you were Dave S. I remember growing up in NYC and all we would do was play Skully. The funny thing about it is about two weeks ago, I was at my parents home and we actually brought up the conversation of playing skully as kids, as I try to explain to my wife (who is originally from California) the rules of the game. My most favorite memory was: this one summer in Prospect Park, they had a Skully tournament, that yes, I did win. The prize, an official fold up Skully board. That I unfortunately and regretably lost. I am going to have to make one and show my kids how its done.

udy Callahan: I was looking for someone that played “Potsy’. Have you learned anything more about how to play? I am putting together a book of GRandma’s Games for the young people to get them into activities that will give tham an opportunity to get some exersize and interact with their peers. I played it as an elementary student and it was my favorite game of marbles.

I lived on 10th st between Dickinson & Tasker until I left Philly in 1976 at the age of 13. Played everything up Wilder st and Greenwhich st. I completely forgot about Manhunt and Hide the Belt. We could think of anything even if nobody had a ball. Love trying to explain Buck Buck to people. I remember between 5 kids nobody had 35 cents for a pimple ball. I used to be able to climb the alleys up 3 story buildings onto the roof. I’d collect all the “roofed” balls and come to the edge and yell “Jackpot!” throwing down a half a dozen pimple balls and halfballs. Would love to get my hands on a pimple ball now just to feel it. I remember it was soft enough to pinch with your middle finger so when you pitched it for slapball it would take a crazy bounce right before the other guy could hit it. Great website. Thank you for the memories.

Another version of the “o’lary”…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on June 12, 2008 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Another version of the “o’lary” or O’Leary rhyme– One,two, three o”lary My first name is Mary If you think it’s necessary Look it up in the dictionary. We would sing this while bouncing an Indian rubber ball, and we would lift our leg over the ball at the end of each line–ie—o’lary, then Mary etc. When we were going to play tag, or hide and go seek we used to put our “dibs” up–(both hands made into fists) and one person would go around the circle and hit each person’s fist with hers, while we all sang “the song”. This was to determine who was “it” at the start of the tag, or hiding-go seek game. One such song was—“My mother gave your mother a punch in the nose. What colour was the blood? The person who’s fist was last hit—on the word blood–would call out a colour–ie-yellow-and the first person would spell the colour out-hitting each fist as she spelled it. When the final letter was said–ie-‘W”-the song would finish—as—“and you are IT. Funny song for kids to sing eh?? Did anyone ever do this type of song. We had quite a few different ones actually. I grew up in Ottawa, Canada–long time ago.
