I was raise in Brooklyn, NY and we used to play that game on roadtrips in the family car. We also played a different version of this game, that we called “punch car” in which you would slug the other player each time one of you spotted a Volkswagon Beetle car (which were also known as Volkswagon “Bugs” to us). But first, you would point at the “Bug” and yell out “punch car” before throwing your punch. We had fun playing these games until someone would punch to hard and a fight would break out in the back seat that usually ended when one of our parents would reach back from the front seat and slap everyone!!! Ha, Ha. I really miss the old days.

I grew up in NJ in the 80s but one of our teachers grew up in Hell’s Kitchen in the 50s and taught us this great game. I remember the time I spent at night trying to perfect the best skelly cap using a soda bottle top, penny in the bottom and melting (and trying to swirl) various colors of crayons. My skill at this rewarded me with my first business venture, charging 50 cents to a dollar for my product!! I can’t wait to teach my children this game!!

Seems like most city games where passed down from 1930/40’s. Until some areas got to dangerous to leave kids outside, watching tv,and then computer and video games really slowed playing outdoors.A major factor in the 1950/60’s was, everyone’s mom was home all day.Now its daycare,i guess somewhere in the future there will be a nostalgia site for daycare memories. SALOOGIE!

From Canarsie thought we made skelesie up. Amazing how many of us played this from all over the city. How did that happen? Didn’t see it on TV, never read about it. And we all melted our crayons down or put wax in the cap. Hours and summer hours…..

Sorry my message above doesnt belong in the skully posts. BUT, i havent read all the skully posts on the size of the board, but the NYC PARKS DEPT. used to paint these in yellow in most parks, has anyone checked with them, they may have old records on file. As i remember they all where the same size in the parks, they must have had a templete to make them all the same.I hope this helps.

Played it in Glen oaks/Bellerose,Queens 50’60;s.It just started all by itself,no reason, someone wanted something back. And that was the start of it,often leading into another game,MONKEY IN THE MIDDLE! In those years seems like we had extended childhoods, playing into our teens.Probably the only years of bieng kids to the extreme, and we did it all,all day long.No children these days can ever come close to the days we had,and thats a shame.

Ive read alot of the differant posts here, and alot of us all played the same or variations of the same games, but alot of posts mention smells after a rain, and warm city nights, hot endless summer days, sounds up on a fire escape. The haze on the streets, steam from manholes. This was the other half of our lives, our sences have a memory too. A sound or scent from our past can transport you to childhood for a minute,i love getting those minutes, and search for them when ever i can.
