How about Steal the Bacon…….

How about Steal the Bacon…. To start someone would throw a can as far as they could everyone would run in the opposite direction to hide, except for one person designated to slowly go get the can, bring it back to base and then try to find us and bring us to base/jail. Simply by tapping the can and saying “tap, tap, tap, I see ______ hiding behind the red car” That person would have to return to the base. The other hiders would try to free those found by racing to the can and kicking it, while the finder was searching for the rest of us. It was great fun..especially having the “finder” and “hider” racing towards the can to tap it or kick it.

On Clay Ave in the Bronx, we played Ringaleavio and another variation called Roundup. We also used the human electric chain.

Does anyone remember the rules for Knucks? I recall that it involved trying to run out of cards before the other person did. If you were left with cards, you got rapped on the knuckles with the flat of the deck once for each card left. There were substitutes, where hitting with different parts of the deck (e.g., the edge) counted for more than one hit with the flat of the deck.

I played what we called bottlecaps outside Philly Germantown area . We used corked bottlecaps and we had a skull and crossbones in the center referred to as the poison box. I have yet to hear anyone in the archives refer to the Handspam werein you spread your hand out as wide as possible and undercertain cicumstances you could move your bottlecap from thumb to pinky to advance towards a certain box. Any pointers on this? I plain forget.. Carol

Alley bat was played in a school yard or an alley wide enough to accommodate a boy swinging a broom stick (the stick ball bat). The batter stood at a wall facing the pitcher. On the wall behind the batter there was a strike zone drawn using chalk. Usually the entire zone was chalked in. The pitcher threw fast balls, curves, etc. at the batter. Three strikes and a batter was out. Three out and the pitcher and batter exchanged places. When the ball was hit, where it landed or struck the surrounding structure determined if it was a single, double, triple, home run or foul ball. Nine innings were played as in baseball. The spaldeen was used, but a tennis ball could also be used. If the batter did not swing at a pitch, a ball or strike was determined by where it hit the wall. If out of the strike zone it was a ball and no chalk was on the ball. In the zone was a strike and the proof was in the chalk.

I am the promotional director for a development in the cumberland mountians and would like to provide tourists with the opportunity to experience days past… including the games they played. I would like information on games in the era of Pioneers and Indian days if you have any. Would like the rules and amount of area it takes to play them as well. ANY suggestions will be helpful. Many thanks Sylvia

I certinly remember skully when i was a 1970’s kid. One time my friends and I went on a pilgrimage in bayridge from 93st to 79st(?)to visit the king of skully! This guy would melt down Lead Fishing sinkers into the caps. It was amazing….back then! Anyone recall using lead as a weight?
