As my daughter said above, it was a wonderful Easter Sunday. I remember playing skully when I lived in the Casle Hill Projects in the Bronx. I had some much fun playing and teaching my children and grandchildren the game. And what I remembered the most was the making of the caps. I told my grandaughter, Taylor, she had to personalize the cap. The cap was the game. We would spend hours going through the trash just to find a few. And every on had their “favorite cap”. We would spend hours on the ground playing. And we were good at it. Showing my kids brought back great mamories. For just a little while, I felt like a kid agane.

WOW! Today is Easter and my parents as well as my brother and his wife joined us for dinner. It was a beautiful day outside and we took all opportunities to enjoy it. My daughter, 8, and sister in law decided to play on the driveway with chalk. My dad who was near by decided to reminisce and show my children and us adults (his children)how to play a game he played when he was a child growing up in the Bronx. Not remembering the name of the game, just the basics of it he taught us this really cool game that had us all playing, from my son age 5 to my dad 46. While playing we discussed how it would be neat to recall the exact rules and dimensions of this game as well as learn/remember others. I suggested the internet by searching under street games. We joked and said we could search under “ghetto games” as this is what my dad refered to them as. Low and behold here I am. When everyone left I came online to research the fun game we learned and played today as a family. I am way to excited to call my dad and send him this website. He will be thrilled. He taught us how to make the bottlecaps with crayons as weight and that is how I was able to pinpoint this game we played. Now I know the name and can find out more about it and learn others. Thank you for taking the time to make this site possible. Hopefully others can go back in time like we did and have just as much fun! Tasha O. Albany NY

In central Indiana everyone I knew played the game standing up and tossing marbles at their opponents marbles (this is mid sixties). This was usually in a large area like a school playground. Usually with glass hoggers or steelies (ball bearings of different sizes). Usually the bigger type because the field was so large. Whomever hit the other’s marble first would usually keep it. I don’t remember a name for this but am sure there was another besides just marbles. I still have a can of mine as well and am teaching my little boy how to play here in Japan! He’s getting good. If anyone knows the name of the standing game of marbles played in a field please refresh my memory.

I played for hours on the corner of 85th St and 21st Ave in Brooklyn, with the rumble of the B train as background music. We had our court on the sidewalk, because there was just too much traffic from 86th Street… there was no way to play a game on the asphalt. We played 13-box, in two versions. If there were a lot of players it was 1-13, for a more leisurely game it was 1-13,13-1 before you could start knocking other players out of the game. In the dark ages before twist off caps, the most prized cap was one with only a slight indentation from a bottle opener. We would rub the caps back and forth, back and forth on the sidewalk to get a smooth silver matte look on the bottom. Pop in a penny over the cork, and melt a candle (“wasting” a crayon that way would have made my mother berserk, “Whaddya think, we get them free from somewhere?”). When the wax was just about firm, if you pulled a piece of paper towel over the cap it put a pattern in the top of the wax. With box ball, tops, yo-yo, skelly, and chinese handball, who needed camp?

I was a skelly adict. In Starett City, Brooklyn in the late 70s, clay was the only choice. I remember using milk tops with wax, but I could never be competitive. It would end up rolling down the sidewalk. Clay was great because you could swirl the color. I would eat a Push-Up every week to get a new top. It was embarrassing to use anything put a push-up top with clay. please include clay in the survey! The only downside was worn out fingernails. I tried to alternate between two fingers to spread the wear-n-tear. We usually played on chalk boards, unless someone had the courage to spraypaint one. The painted ones would usually be cleaned away, and the dimensions were usually off.

In Jersey City, we played a little “tougher” version of Ringoleario, as we used to call it, called “Manhunt.” Same rules as ringoleario except that when you caught someone, you had to physically take him into custody. In other words he could fight you to keep you from “arresting” him. You could beat him until he “gave up” and walked quietly back to jail. Then of course, he could be freed by someone on his team landing on the jail block and yelling “Free All!” Tony C

Does anyone remember the scratchoff football gamecard that came with the (I believe Topps)football cards (mid seventies)? I loved those!

I must say that this site took me back to my youth at 109st btwn Madison & 5th Ave in Manhattan in the late 60s to mid 70s…I’ve read all the messages! I had one of best “caps” ever made. I found an old school chair, removed the metal floor things on the bottom of the legs and filled them with candlewax. They were almost indestructable, slid great and was so difficult to “blast”.Boy, that was one of my favorite games to play…Thanks for this site and for bringing me memories of those days…signing off, a true Killer Diller!

Wow! Its great to read about how other’s have played Skelly. I remember spending many summers playing it (as well as kick the can, catch and kill, ringolerio, tops, ….). My block (In Brooklyn, Gratten St, not far from Knickerbocker Ave) had great glass bottle top players. Its kind of sad that with all the high tech games, todays kids won’t have that kind of physical experience. Yeah, I exaggerate. But, maybe not, I wouldn’t let my kids play in the street; not with todays vehicular pace. While dialing a cell phone you could go over many skelly boxes!
