We used to play a game where the Fox would stand with his or her back to the rest of the gang, who would all line up far back (the depth of the back yard, in this case). The gang asks the question, “What time is it, Mr. Fox?” while, at the same time, moving forward as far as they dare. Fox says a time, like “One o’clock.” They ask the question and move again, and he says another time. I don’t remember whether the times had to be sequential. Maybe. One of the gang wants to be able to touch the Fox to win, to be the next Fox. BUT at one point, at Fox’s discretion, Fox will answer the question with, “DINNER TIME!” and turn around and touch everyone he can, while they all run back to the beginning line. Does anyone else remember this one?

Of course the spaldeen (especially the much-beloved #4, although #2 was also good) was always better than the pinky, although that pinky could really fly when hit with a bat! Most of you can probably relate, but I wish I could explain to my friends here in the Midwest what it was like growing up on E. 15th St. near Kings Highway in the ’70s. Our street was full of kids and we played all the time: johnny on the pony, stoopball, stickball, hockey on roller skates, scully, red rover, i declare war (losers always “went under the moon”), wiffle ball, ringaleavio. And the games in the schoolyards, like handball, off the wall, paddleball. There’s got to be a million spaldeens on the roof at PS 199 where I went and all the other schools, too. It was like a soap opera, too.

I grew up in Chelsea in NYC and we played a game called Russia. It was played against a wall with a “spaldine”(as we called it). Has anyone played that game?

It broke my heart that i could not get anybody to feel me. Before i got into girls i played from day to night, make the court out of chalk, rocks, whatever we could find , and the tops was the push-ups from the ice cream truck, or red milk tops. I loved it and still do iam gonna pass it on to my son and bring skelly to the ATl.” hit a killer be a killer” p.s. just like carol kleinman above me i ran blvd in the 80’s right in p.s.273 i lived on barbey st

Two lines of kids joining hands, facing each other, about 20-30 feet apart. One line would call: “Red rover, red rover, send _________ over!” The named kid, on the other side, would have to run and try to break through anywhere on the calling side’s line (usually the two weakest-looking kids). If the kid succeeded in breaking through, he/she would pick one child from that line’s squad to bring back to his/her team (usually the strongest/biggest kid). If the kid didn’t bust thru the line, he/she joined that line. The side won (of course, by then everyone was on it!) when no kids were left on the other side. With well- matched & determined kids, this could take all day!

Facing the stoop a kid yells out Red Light Green Light, 123, while the kids behind him run as far as they can.. May I take a Giant Step? Yes, yes you may… don’t remember the rules of these games. We played statues by one person standing center and spinning the other kids in turn in a circle by their hands till they let go and however they stopped or landed, they had to freeze into position and not move. We played war with a chalk piechart of country names and you bounced the ball in the country you declared war on. What a hoot. Great website….I’ll be sending these games and rhymes to my other fortysomething friends from Queens!

I grew up in the East New York section of Brooklyn in the 1950’s. Remembered Playing skelly outside on the sidewalk in front of the blvd projects. We made skelly caps from soda caps with the cork still in it. While the crayon wax was still wet we would put a charm that would come out of a gumball machine in it. Loved the game .
