Handball…by sam g. this was also played like baseball xcept played in small streets or back street between row houses played by 4 or more …bases drawn.. infielder & an outfielder (or more), batter tossed ball up from homeplate and hit w/fist and ran bases..sometimes past a certain landmark automatic h.run…also played on wide streets w/full infield and pitcher who had to pitch it on 1 bounce…

Deadbox. I remember that one. We called the bottle caps “beeries”. Sometimes we rubbed them on the concrete to remove the paint and make them smooth. We’d also sometimes melt a candle and fill the cap with wax to make the beery heavier.

Hi Marc, I really don’t know how one could play skully on a manhole cover–in fact, I remember playing adjacent to one and avoiding it at all costs in fear of losing our treasured caps down the holes you’d find in it! However, I don’t mean to say your brain is turning to mush… I can imagine a game being played on a manhole if it were sufficiently smooth (I’ve seen smooth ones). If you could tell us more about it–like what era you played it–we’d all love to hear about it. It’s great to hear that about any skully variant, especially outside of the NYC/Philly areas. -Hugh McNally hmcnally [at] streetplay [dot] com

Well….. I like to think, and I dont care what Mooney says, that I was The King of BOXBALL. Why?! Because if you hit it (with your fist after being pitched) down the pisshole(a flight of marble steps leading down to a ground floor door of the school,Creighton, which was also used for draining of the you know what)you could, and should, take third. And if fat Herbie was playing the pisshole; you’re home! And man could i find that pisshole. I’ll line up to buy pimple balls!!!!!!!! ZMAN

In York PA this coming Saturday Sept.22-01 we are having a fundraiser/stickball event. We are having other games too, such as boxball, jacks, jumprope, yo-yos, and of course Marbles. Spalding hopefully is donating the pink balls-either way they are the best, so come out and join us for a great time-food-knishes while they last, root beer floats, old fashioned candy-hoola hoop etc. This event is held at an old shopping center Called Ames on East Market street across from another shopping center, which has Lowes and Giants in it. Thank you Nancy Costa

Sight is great, will be a wonderful place to go back to my youth. Looking foward to seeing the rules from the various sections of the city posted. Looking forward to finding a lot of the guys I grew up with. See a lot of them at the shore, but many have moved away, and would love to renew old relationships. Still play halfball on a regular basic, even started selling them on to other guys who are to old to climb roofs, or hang in sewers. Feel free to contact me for information Polish of Logan

how ’bout a game of “punchball” just like baseball the only difference was no pitcher and no bat. The batter would step up to homeplate and simply punch the rubber or tennis ball. “PLAY BALL!!!”
