My daughter was doing a school project comparing what I did in middle school to what she does. One of the questions was what did I do for fun. Skully was the first thing that came to mind. I’m from Brooklyn and now live in Maryland so my daughter looked at me like I was crazy. I tried to describe the game to her but I was alittle fuzzy so I looked it up online. A couple of things I noticed right away were the board and the scully cap. Every block in my neighborhood had a perminant board about 6′ x 6′ or so dug into the tar of the street, no chalk to get washed away, I want to say we used a screwdriver to accomplish this. Our caps were also filled with tar from the street that we dug out with the screwdriver. This was best done on hot days so the tar was softer. I see alot of refernces to sidewalk game, again everyone I knew played it in the street. I did get annoying yelling “car” or if a car’s tire made your piece move, but since the street was our playground we lived with it.

If the SBHS web site wasn’t enough, this is the greatest. I grew up in Vanderveer Estates. Choy’s, Mano’s and Lenny’s Pizzerias [some of the first around], Mark’s Toy Corner, Carl and Mike’s candy store, Louie’s candy store near the library on Nostrand. Anyone hear from Teddy Friedman or Jackie Fagan? How about when JFK campaigned on the corner of Nostrand and Foster. I stuck my head in the car to shake Herbert Lehman’s hand and couldn’t believe it — an air conditioned car. Any grads of PS 269: Mr. Farb, Mr. Spiro, Mr. Shapiro, Mrs. Genge, Mrs. Ephraim, whom, I’m ashamed to say, Stewart Meyer and I gave an ulcer to. PS 89: Mr. Ezekiel, Mrs. Branhower. I still speak with Abe Schwarz and his sister Helen. We all lived at 1414 New York Avenue. Let me know.

Wow….where do I begin?…

Wow….where do I begin? I suppose by saying that I really miss seeing you around, Steve! Steve and I went to Norman Thomas High School together. We also grew up in the Bronx together (I still live in Pelham Parkway – He, in Castle Hill)…As things in life turn out…our paths crossed again as adults. Steve’s Firehouse was just two blocks away from my job! One day, as I was walking to lunch, I hear someone calling me..I didn’t recognize him but he began to talk about Norman Thomas to me..then I realized that Steve Mercado had gone from high school nerd to rugged firefighter! Thereafter, I’d see him often…in front of the Plaza Hotel..coming back from runs, doing inspections at my office building, etc. I felt honored to be his friend. I had planned to go to the high school reunion with him. He was kind enough to offer me a ride as I had no way of getting there, while he also stated that I’d have to find a way home with someone else as he planned to stay long at the reunion. He was a real family man to his wife and children. When the tragedy of 9/11 occurred I lost a fireman I was seeing as well as his brother and another close friend. I didn’t think anything would happen to Steve. He did, after all, work around Lincoln Center, and I assumed during those moments that those closest to WTC would perish (like my friends whose firehouse was in Brooklyn). I was shocked and saddened, therefore, to hear of Steve’s untimely death. Recently, several people from my job, and I went to his job and prayed. Afterwards some of his ‘brothers’ invited us in for coffee and desert and it was nice to share ‘Steve’ stories. My heart goes out to his parents, his wife and his children. Deb

I remember when dating outside…

I remember when dating outside of your neighborhood, your “clique,” your race, your borough, was like dating outside of your species. My first date outside of my species met me in Manhattan for movies and art shows and things the guys in my hood didn’t even know existed, or would dismiss the art museums and film noir as being interests of male “flames.” He would’ve been beaten to a pulp had I let him take me home, like he asked on many occasions. “The City” had folk from places I’d never even heard of. I hung out with a young man from the United Nations High school who was born in a small village in Chile. He frequented Kenya and his father was from Spain. He turned me on to writers and movies that had nothing to do with action heroes and romance. A Korean holistic doctor, who made more cash than his NYMD brother, took me traveling and got me interested in reindeer antlers and bear’s bladders. “Mixing” erased a lot of false notions taught to me by family and location. Even though I was from the low-end of the monetary status pole, I was an adventurous American born just across the Brooklyn Bridge from one of the world’s greatest cities that afforded me the chance to expose myself to elements foreign to my upbringing; it opened many dimensions to my thinking. I was flat-out shocked at how beautifully I was received in Germany and Denmark, even Poland and Russia. Not only did the German, Dane, and Dutch guys light up like Christmas trees when I came around, they actually took me to meet their parents on the first date (Only at a court appearance was I introduced to a guy’s parents here at home). A woman could get spoiled being treated like a valued lady. No drooling carnivores. My son is young, but I’m glad to see he has mom’s international tastes. I never pigeonholed him. I hope he brings the girl(s) home to meet Mom; maybe that’s the secret to keeping “the law” out of the relationship. Dating outside of my species did more than add new flavor to the menu, it created a new, stronger and more evolved me.

As a former brooklynite I remember many days playing skelly in the Marlboro housing projects in Gravesend. It’s kinda sad that kids today don’t play the games we used to play and and I’m 30 years old . I mean games like tag , off the wall, stoop ball, asses up, manhunt etc. They mostly are locked in front of the TV . I would like to know the size of the skelly board. I can’t remember and besides every building had a skelly board spray painted nearby , thanks to the ” big kids “. I don’t recall ” out of town “in skelly. What is it ?

Hello Ballfolk I have Jack Russell Terriers and I bought a Spalding Hi Bounce for my favorite one to play with. She will fetch as many times as I will throw it. When she brings it back she bites it hard and shoots it from her mouth like a bulletand sometimes I can even catch it like she is throwing it. From a 55 year old man to your youth be brave and strong seek power and wisdon

Tuesday night FIREWORKS from the Boardwalk and Shatzkins knishes and the best Pizza ever! Making out UNDER THE BOARDWALK and the kewpie dolls and the FREAK shows……The parachute ride was the best…remember having to take your sandals off before you rode up? The terrific view up and the SCARY ride down, and how it ‘bounced’ when you landed? I live in Orlando, now, but the Coney Island of my childhood is forever in my mind, forever in my heart.. Suzie

To Steve’s family and friends,…

To Steve’s family and friends, my heartfelt condolence. I wish I could say I knew him better. I talked to Steve a few times on the phone. I had e-mailed him for help on my stickball league in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and he was such a gentleman, having called me back right away and give me advice on many things. I was truly impressed and knew this was a good man, for anyone that goes out of their way for a stranger truly is good people in my book. Little did I know he was a fireman and not till today did I know that he went out of his way for 30,000 people the day of Sept. 11. I guess my hunch that he was a good man and gentleman was understated to say the least. Just makes me so mad and sad to know that these people, if you can call them that, took more than just the buildings away from N.Y.C. They took Steve, a very special man. All my sorrow to his family and friends. -Vinny Ponzo from Bath Beach Stickball League, Brklyn
