The way I always played Chinese jumprope was “In, out, side by side, on, in, out.” In- jump with both legs inside of the ropes. Out- jump out of the ropes. Side by side- Straddle one side of the rope (with one leg on each side of it), then straddle the other side of the rope. On- step on one side of the rope with each foot. out-jump out to one side. If you did it without messing up, then the rope gets higher, and so on. I was ok at double dutch, I didn’t get to play much because most of the kids I knew didn’t play it. I was GREAT at turning the ropes, though, hehe…

Hey, isn’t it interesting how different people know slightly different rhymes? I guess some people hear it differently, or they add things on to it. It’s kinda like that game “telephone” I’m 18, so most of the games/rhymes I learned in the 80s it’d be interesting to know how long these were around…

The patty cake I heard was Patty cake, patty cake, baker’s man bake me a cake as fast as you can. Roll it and pat it, and mark it with a B, put it in the over for baby and me! It was a game to play with little babies…

Here are a few I remember…

Here are a few I remember that weren’t for clapping, just to sing/say: Have you ever in your life seen the devil with his wife? No I’ve never in my life seen the devil with his wife. Have you eever iver over in your leefe life lofe seen the deevil divil dovil with his weefe wife wofe? No I’ve neever, niver… etc etc. Then there’s anna, banana, banana SPLIT! Which is either for doing the splits or for chinese jumprope… Here’s a funny one you say. There’s also a version of it in the movie The Labyrinth. Person 1: You remind me of a man! 2: What man? 1: The man with the power! 2: What power?? 1: The power of Whoodoo! 2: Who do? 1: You do! 2: I do what!? 1: You remind me of a man!! And on and on… The way I did it, we would keep acting more frustrated as we went on. Another one like that is where one person says “thank you” the other says “you’re welcome” first says “thank you for saying you’re welcome” second says “thank you for saying thank you for saying you’re welcome” and on and on… I also remember the X marks the spot one. You do it on someone’s back to give them the chills. My friends and I LOVED that one, we’d do it over and over hehe… It was something like this: Circle circle, (mark circles on their back) X X, (mark x’s) spider running down your back, (tickle your fingers lightly down their back) Tight squeeze, (squeeze em) cool breeze, (blow on their back) now you’ve got the chillies! Another game is where you say “I won a _____ (whatever) such as: First person: I won a bicycle Second person: I two a bicycle first person: I three a bicycle second: I four a bicycle first: I five a bicycle second: I six a bicycle first: I seven a bicycle second: I eight a bicycle first person: You ATE a bicycle?!?! This works best with an ‘unsuspecting’ person, hehe… My sister made one up where you don’t stop at 8. You say “I one a turner” and you go up to eighteen, so the person says “I eighteen a turner” and you say “You ate Tina Turner!?” heh.

There are a few songs we used to use to pick who would be “It” in a game. One was the bubblegum one. (bubblegum bubblegum in a dish) another was something about a railroad track. Then of course there was: Eeny, meeny, miney, moe. catch a tiger by the toe. if he hollers let him go. eeny, meeny, miney, moe! someone added: My mother told me to pick the very best one and that is you! One each word, you were supposed to point to one person.

I know some jumprope songs: I like coffee, I like tea. I like the boys and the boys like me. Yes, no, maybe so. Yes, no, maybe so. You keep going, whenever you trip up, whatever answer you were on, that’s the answer to whether the boys like you. Then there’s teddybear. You do whatever it tells you: Teddybear, teddybear, turn around. Teddybear, teddybear, touch the ground. Teddybear, teddybear, jump up high. Teddybear, teddybear touch the sky. We always used the bluebells one to start jumping. If someone didn’t want to jump in, we’d swing the rope back and forth instead of all the way around, and at Over we’d go over. Bluebells, cockleshells, evy, ivy, over! Then we’d start whichever rhyme we were doing. The way I played Chinese jump rope is I just would sing/do: in, out, side by side! On, in, out. Then if you do that without messing up, the people make the rope higher. In is both feet inside the ropes. Out is both feet out of the ropes. Side by side, you jump so your feet are “straddling” (one on each side of) one rope, the you jump up and over so both feet are straddling the other rope. On is one foot on each rope. That’s the hardest part!

I knew that Macy’s one too, but we said Mexico! The way we played it, you would put your hands together with them pointing toward the other person, the other person would put theirs together, and you put your hands side by side. To clap, you would each put one hand up but still facing sideways and clap the other person’s hand, then each go down. When the words were 3 together, you’d clap the same hands 3 times instead of switching. It got pretty hard when you tried to go fast! : I don’t wanna go to Mexico no more-more-more. There’s a big fat policeman at my door-door-door. He took me by the collar, and made me pay a dollar, That’s why I don’t go to Mexico no more-more-more. It made less sense than Macy’s, but it rhymes better! I also know this one: I met my boyfriend at the candy shop. He bought me candy, he bought me cake. He bought me home with a bellyache! Mama, mama, I’m so sick! Call the doctor, quick-quick-quick! Doctor, doctor, what to do? (or something like that, I always get that part mixed up with the “let’s hear the rhythme” one) Count to five and you’ll be alive. One, two, three, four, five. I’m alive! Six, seven, eight, nine, ten. I’m dead again! (silly huh?)

Miss Suzy went to heaven, the steamboat went to… Hell-o operator, please give me number nine, and if you disconnect me, I’ll chop off your… Behind the fridgerator, there was a piece of glass! I know the other one about Miss Suzy too, where she goes ooh, aah. At least on version of it. It’s a little raunchy: Miss Suzy was a baby, a baby, a baby, Miss Suzy was a baby, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, ooh aah aah!” (pretend to suck your thumbs, once each word) Miss Suzy was a schoolgirl, a schoolgirl, a schoolgirl! Miss Suzy was a schoolgirl, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, ooh aah aah!” (flip your hair back over your shoulders once each word) Miss Suzy was a teenager, a teenager, a teenager, Miss Suzy was a teenager, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, I lost my bra! I left it in my boyfriend’s car!” Miss Suzy was a teacher, a teacher, a teacher, Miss Suzy was a teacher, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, ooh aah aah!” (shake your finger once each word) Miss Suzy was a mother, a mother, a mother, Miss Suzy was a mother, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, ooh aah aah!” (rock a pretend baby in your arms) Miss Suzy was a grandmother, a grandmother, a grandmother, Miss Suzy was a grandmother, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, ooh aah aah!” (rock in a pretend rocking chair) Miss Suzy went to heaven, to heaven, to heaven, Miss Suzy went to heaven, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, ooh aah aah!” (flap your “wings) Miss Suzy went to he-ell, to he-ell, to he-ell, Miss Suzy went to he-ell, and this is what she said! “ooh, aah, ooh aah aah!” (pretend to be poked by a pitchfork at each word)

Up came the bathtub that wouldn’t go down his throat! Miss suzy slapped the doctor, miss suzy slapped the nurse! Miss suzy payed the later with the alligator purse! Out went the doctor, out went the nurse, out went the lady with the alligator purse!
