I’m an art student doing a full-page layout about jacks. Does anyone know the history of the game? Who invented it, and when? This was one of my favorite games as a kid.

There is a toy store in the Pittsburgh International Airport that carries good quality jacks but the ball is a super ball and not the old red rubber ball. My mother was a jack champ in Pittsburgh and she talked about razzies and coggzies, but I don’t remember how to do them. Would appreciate if anyone can help. I would like to teach my grandaughter.

My best friend and I played jacks every day for 2 1/2 years. We were the champs. We would play absolutely anywhere and draw crowds with our special tricks, especially no bouncies. Everyone loved no bouncies. After we got tired of perfecting all the levels (single bouncies, double bouncies, cherries in a basket, pigs in a pen, sheep over a fence, hook the fish, crack the egg, around the world, and no bouncies) we started playing left handed. We still play everytime we see each other, and I still try and teach anyone who wants to learn. We only have 9 levels and are on the look out for a tenth, any suggestions?

My mother cleaned out her storage and gave me a box of what I remember to be “Chinese Jacks”. They are the little plastic rings that are snapped together around one ring right?!! My daughter made a belt and brought it over to me. I saw them and about fell over. I remember being so obsessed with these things and we used to play a game resembling jacks. I would love to find out more and teach my 5 year old daughter and maybe it would be the big craze at school again this year!

Hello everyone. I’m looking…

Hello everyone. I’m looking for girls from 4th to 8th grade who play jacks at lightning speed for an art video project I am working on. I’m an art & design grad student at the University of Michigan and just got a grant for a one week lease of a really cool high-speed video camera. I’m using this camera to shoot a number of things that were around in my childhood including water balloons in the face (of myself and my now grown friends), jumping-jack firecrackers going off, and girls playing jacks. The camera will be able to slow all of these gestures down to superslow motion. Therefore, the faster and more skilled the jacks players the better. Any suggestions where I might look? I only have funds for a one week lease on the camera so I really want to find a source for this ASAP before I schedule the camera rental. Does anyone know if there is any sort of competative league for kids or clubs in the midwest area? The closer to ANN ARBOR, MI–the better. Please email me at jaleonar [at] umich [dot] edu By the way, I plan on shooting directly from above. So the girls will remain anonymous and iconic. The focus will be on the jacks and the hands.

Remember Black Widow? That’s where you play onesies to tensies without missing. If you miss, you have to start over at onesies again. It’s fun to create your own fancies to this time-less classic game!

Another person was looking for directions to “Jack Be Nimble”. I know the posting is a couple of years old, but perhaps someone else is looking for it too. For “Jack be Nimble” you toss the ball up and say “Jack Be nimble”. Touch the ground and catch the ball. Do it again but say “Jack Be Quick”. Then toss the ball up and say “Jack jumped over”> Touch the ground on both sides of a jack and catch the ball. Then throw the ball up and say “The candlestick”> Pick up the jack and catch the ball.

I’m an elementary school librarian and purchased a cool book from www.compasspointbooks.com as part of their Games Around the World Series. It’s called “Jacks” by Elizabeth Dana Jaffe. I purchased several sets of plastic jacks from the local Target store. Many of my students are immigrants who have never seen the game before and were mesmerized. The book gives a very short history of jacks, a glossary, and shows how to play a jacks game from South Korea “Kong-Keui” and Haiti “Osselets” and of course the American “Jumpin’ Jacks – onsies, twosies…” An earlier message asked about 2 jacks that were on top of each other. Someone said it was “kissies”. Actually, it’s “haystacks”. “Kissies” is when both jacks were on the ground but one leg of the jack was touching the other.
