Does anyone remember Ben…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 26, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 19, 2014

Does anyone remember Ben Casey/Dr. Kildare shirts? (Difference was one buttoned up on the left and one on the right – I’ve forgotten which was which). White cotton mock turtleneck shirts with buttons up the side in the early 60s, when there was rivalry going on between Ben C. and Jim K. They were great to wear bopping around the neighborhood with your transistor radio up against your ear. Also, as I recall, shirts that exposed the belly button were not invented in the 1990s. Doesn’t anyone remember those cotton half-shirts with the ruffles that ended somewhere way short of your navel? They were so, so cool – literally and figuratively. By the way, I loved those sunsuits. Had lots of them as a kid. Wish I could still pull that off!

Platform shoes were the…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 26, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

Platform shoes were the bane of my existence as a youngster. By the age of 13 I was 5’9″, and the guys really hadn’t caught up with me. I soon leveled off at 5’11” and pretty much stayed in my jeans and deck sneakers and sandals till age 18, when finally I started dating someone three inches taller than me who was into all that John Travolta garb when we went out. In his platforms he was about 6’4″, so I could wear whatever shoes I wanted (by then, of course, plain old pumps and flats were back in vogue). Sometimes in high school I would wear clogs (they made a great banging sound on the all-metal staircase running up to the 7th floor tower, where my homeroom was). That was fun. We could all recognize each other by the sound of our shoes, so to speak, and stop to meet and hang a bit in the stairwell on the way up to class.

Please allow me to share my views on the subject. IMHO, Spaldeens (as they are pronounced) are the proper tool for games such as stickball, however I have found Pennsy Pinkies more appropriate for Chinese handball and boxball.

I grew up in the Bedford Park area in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. Played stickball, touch football, ringo, skelly, off the point, corner ball, etc. on Briggs Avenue. A great place to be a kid!

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 25, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

1 day a year a few friends meet the game they play is in the street a ball is hit against a curb so you can;t play it in the burbs everyone aims for the perfect point if you dont hit it – there is always a joint games are hot out on the black top but no one ever wants to stop sometimes balls fly on the roof when that happens you feel like a goof the game is played extremly hard its more intense than Camden Yard players fight and playesrs swear but you wont find bad blood anywhere so as you can see curb ball is wild just keep on playing it like a child.

back to the baltimore version – 3 on a side is the way the game should be played. A tennis ball is hit against the curb and most rules follow regular baseball rules.more to follow. Email me with Questions .

We didn’t call the game Mother…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 25, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 14, 2014

We didn’t call the game Mother May I, we called it Giant Steps. We had a great group of kids living in our development (about a dozen four story buildings encircling a courtyard, which was our world). No one really got picked on; we all kind of just goofed around with each other good naturedly. We took turns being the king of the hill, and we took turns being the one being goofed on. Sometimes we’d get eight giant steps, sometimes we’d get one baby step. It was lots of fun. There was also a fenced-in lawn in the center of the courtyard. We’d run races around the lawn, starting at the same point, each runner going in opposite direction around the circumference of the lawn (which seemed enormous at the time). Who ever got back to “home base” first won. The stoop was reserved for more reserved games like house, horses and Barbies. We had a deluxe stoop; it was almost like a cement deck. There was plenty of room to congregate and go into our little fantasy worlds up there. Once in a while we would get showered with pennies by some kind stranger who would throw them down to us in the middle of our play. We never found out who that was. We thought it was magic.

I want a charlotte russe!…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 25, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

I want a charlotte russe! A real charlotte russe with the scallop edged carboard holder, that perfect little round piece of cake and all of the luscious REAL whipped cream. And the cherry. It has to have a cherry; not a stupid strawberry like they have on the ersatz thingies that are sold at our local bakery. I want a charlotte russe now!!

The Highlandtown (Balt)…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 25, 1999 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

The Highlandtown (Balt) version is called curb ball. It is played in the intersection with the 4 corners as bases. We still play this game once a year. If anyone wants more details let me know.
