I was just at a playground (PS 35 on Staten Island) today and I saw something I described to my 9 year old daughter as a “skelly court”. I had seen it before today but this time I tried to explain the rules to her, but a couldn’t remember all of them, so I decided to try a search engine and lo and behold I found Streetplay, with a skellsie section, no less. This is fantastic!!!

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 28, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsNovember 17, 2014

I have been trying to remember a similiar spaldeen game to Russian 10, however, the rules I remember are a little different: 1 – one (throw ball and clap once) 2 – twos(throw ball and clap twice) 3 – threes (throw ball and clap 3x) 4 – highzies (throw ball up high) 5 – lowzies (throw ball low) 6 – around the world (throw ball and roll arms) 7 – touch my shoulders 8 – touch my toes 9 – under your leg then you do it in combination. Anyone know anymore or how the “song” goes?

How about Steal the Bacon…….

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 25, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsJuly 25, 2000

How about Steal the Bacon…. To start someone would throw a can as far as they could everyone would run in the opposite direction to hide, except for one person designated to slowly go get the can, bring it back to base and then try to find us and bring us to base/jail. Simply by tapping the can and saying “tap, tap, tap, I see ______ hiding behind the red car” That person would have to return to the base. The other hiders would try to free those found by racing to the can and kicking it, while the finder was searching for the rest of us. It was great fun..especially having the “finder” and “hider” racing towards the can to tap it or kick it.

On Clay Ave in the Bronx, we played Ringaleavio and another variation called Roundup. We also used the human electric chain.

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 23, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsFebruary 16, 2019

I grew up in the Fredrick Douglas Housing Projects on 104th St. between Columbus and Manhattan Avenues in NYC back in the late 50’s and through the sixties. I must have been really under privledged back then ’cause I’ve never even heard of a pensie pinky or anything thereabouts. Oh yeah I played StickBall, Stoopball, Punchball, hell, even Whiffleball. We even pitched and hit bottlecaps, but the only ball I ever knew was the “Spaulding” better known as the “Spauldeen” and that’s what we used, except for whiffleball of course. Anyway, there was one thing we did to old, beaten-up, dead, on their last leg spauldeen’s just before sending them to that big spauldeen factory in the sky… Does anybody out there remember “Roofin” a spauldeen!!! Oh yeah! If you had an arm and thought you could throw it up onto one of the taller 21 story project buildings you were not to be messed with!!!

What a great discussion…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on July 23, 2000 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

What a great discussion ! And what great memories all this brings back ! I especially enjoyed visiting the link to the kids games that someone posted… Red Rover… Ghost In The Graveyard… Mama May I… Red Light Green Light… ahh, man!! I played all that when I was a kid! I loved Chinese jumprope too and like many others here I’d love the rules from someplace if anyone has them, I’d love to teach my young cousins how to do it. Never did the “double dutch” jumping… not adept enough! It was all I could do to keep going if we were doing a game where we had to do fast jumping! Haha!! These rhymes are all so familiar as well ! Thanks for a great little memory jolt and something pleasant to pas a slow and quiet Sunday afternoon ! Take care!
