Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 25, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsOctober 20, 2014

I WAS BORN IN THE BRONX AND DELIVERED AT THE OLD LINCOLN HOSPITAL ON JACKSON AND WESTCHESTER AVE IN 1935. AND LIVED ON UNION AVE.BETWEEN 155 AND 156 ST. AS I GOT OLDER (6YRS) THE GUYS ON MY STREET AND THE GUYS ON UNION BETWEEN 156 AND WESTCHESTER AVE.WE WOULD ALWAYS COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER MOST OF US WENT PS#52 AND THOSE THAT DIDN’T WENT TO ST.ANSELMS CATHOLIC SCHOOL.WE WERE ALWAYS ON THE STRETS PLAYING STICKBALL, HIDE AND SEEK, RINGALEVIO, COPS AND ROBBERS, PUNCHBALL, FLYING KITS OFF THE ROOFS WITH RAZOR BLADES ON THE KITS TAIL TO CUT THEIR STRING. WE BECAME VERY CLOSE IN ALL THOSE YEARS GROWING UP NO ONE EVER SEEM TO MOVE AWAY. WE WOULD HANG OUT AT A COMMUNITY CENTER CALLED THE MELAROSE HOUSE OR ON THE STREET CORNER AT 156 AND UNION AVE. WE STARTED TO BRAKE UP WHEN WE LEFT FOR THE ARMED SERVICE OR GOT MARRIED. IN OUR TEENS WE FORMED ONE STICKBALL TEAM THE “LANCERS” AND PLAYED GREAT STICKBALL ON THE WEEKENDS FOR MONEY. THE LOCAL BOOK MAKERS AND STORE MERCHANTS WOULD BE THE HEAVY BETTERS. WE PLAYED TEAMS LIKE THE LUCK 7’S, THE NIGHTS THE ROCKETS NAMES I DONT REMEMBER FROM WALES AVE AND LONGWOOD AVE. THOSE WERE GREAT TIMES.

I was a jacks “champion” in sleepover camp many years ago and now my 7 1/2 year old daughter is learning to play. It’s amazing how good I am now that I have a grown-up sized hand!!! I had forgotten that the fancies were called fancies. I only was able to remember squeeze a lemon. Can someone post exactly how to do Jack be Nimble? And, exact steps for any other fancies? Thanks so much!!!!

I used to play stickball…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 22, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsJanuary 3, 2020

I used to play stickball with both spaldeens and pensie pinkies. I preferred the pinkie as it seemed I could do more with it. when I was 15 I used to be able to throw a curve ball that would make the batter duck out of the way, just as the ball broke over the middle of the box. I was a stickball king. a God of sorts. I still play at age 52 and can beat most kids. Those were golden times and the pensie pinkie was part of it. I could also hit that ball into orbit. Like Mickey Mantle, my hits were high and far. Many times the balls were lost, presumed to be in orbit over the earth. So if you ever hear of a UFO and it is described as pink and round, please let me know.

In the Bronx in the the late 60’s and 70’s we played a game called off the curb. We had two players on each team you throw the ball down on the curb a ground ball caught by the infielder was an out as so were fly balls balls hit over the parked cars on a fly were a double if the ball hit the building in was a triple or home run depending how high it hit. Aside from the 1998 “Welcome Back to Brooklyn Street Fair,” are there any other events/gatherings where Skully enthusiasts can get together and engage in a friendly game? How about something in the Big Apple this summer?

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 18, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 18, 2001

Wow! I thought I was the only one on a quest to revive jacks. I’ve been looking for them for weeks at the “usual” toy stores — only to find plastic jacks. I can’t believe that finding metal jacks is so difficult! I forgot entirely about “fancies” until I read this discussion. I now remember playing “lick the lollipop” and recall putting the jacks in a circle — but I don’t remember the rest of the rules. Anyone remember them?

People go to Mecca, Thailand,…

Streetplay Discussion Archive Posted on May 18, 2001 by Streetplay DiscussionsMay 9, 2019

People go to Mecca, Thailand, India, etc. for spiritual insight, Others seeking personal meditative space have weekend homes upstate or can jet somewhere at will…. but for those of us of humble monetary means I can attest to the fact that some of the most crucial moves made in my life were carefully weighed for pros and cons beforehand, on a fire escape; the one place where the noise of the city can be as serene as the the sound of wild life in the woods. My godfather owned a rent-controlled apt on 8th ave. and 56th st. I would apt. sit for him all the time. It was a cool small split level old artists studio with a sky roof. Always smelled of incense and espresso. The radio always on Jazz 88. We called that small place “the Gazebo”. I spent many summers nights and days on the fire escape of that building watching the madness roll by. Witnessed a few road rage attacks, domestic interludes, heat strokes, killer sound systems. Felt like a pigeon scoping the city from above. Slept under the stars on a futon on hot night on that fire escape. Invited a bunch of redneck musician friends of mine from lewisburg and fleetwood PA to do an unplugged jam up there. Caused alot of people to look up and check out the great music. I lived in the East Village, and when I didn’t want to be found I would head to that apt. and that “escape” and just enjoy the peace.

Because I have a cold, sir Where’d you get your cold, Sir From the north pole, Sir What you doin’ there, Sir? Catchin’ polar bears, Sir How many did you catch, Sir?
